SUCCESS FOR SENIORS

After two fine weather trips to away courses, we returned to Trefloyne to be greeted with dark cloud and the promise of rain, which when it arrived was in the form of persistent heavy showers. Lead group off the first tee were Derek Jones and Bob Burkes playing Roger Horsefall and Brian Newcomb. Derek and Bob got off to a fast start, winning the first two holes, but were pulled back to a lead of one when the away pair won the third. Winning the fourth regained the two-hole advantage for the home pair. Three halves followed, before Derek and Bob won holes eight and nine to lead four up. Roger and Brian won the 10th, but with the home pair winning the 12th and 13th, giving them a lead of five with six to play, a half on the 14th was enough for a five and four win. Second off of the first tee were Trevor Lewis and Darrell Jones playing Jeff Thomas and Ian Robertson. Another fast start from the home pair saw them winning the first two holes before being pulled back on the fourth. Jeff and Ian then went on to win the sixth and seventh holes to go one up, but were immediately pulled back by a home win on the eighth, the match being all-square after a half on the ninth. The Derllys pair then won the12th to lead by one, but a win on the 14th by Trefloyne brought the scores level again. Three more halves meant all was to play for on the final hole and this went the way of Darrell and Trevor to give the home pair a one-up victory. Third off the first were Mike Allen and Jack Zeraschi versus John Hartley and Martin Davies. A tight game at first, with Martin winning the fourth to put the away pair in the lead, before Jack won the ninth to draw level. The 10th was halved, then a run of form from John saw him win the 11th and 12th to par and the 13th with a five net four. Although the home pair won the 14th, a further par on 15 and birdie two on 16, both by John, saw the Derllys pair home with a four and two win. Next to play from the first tee were Graham Longster and John Richards against Chris Palmer and Phil Rogers. Graham and John won the first, but then lost the next two holes. This was as good as it got for the away pair as Graham and John then went on to win the sixth, seventh and ninth to take a two-hole lead after nine. The away pair won the 10th, but wins on the next four holes by Graham and John saw the home pair win five and four. The final pair to tee-off the first were Dennis Holloway and John James, who played against Peter Jones and Idwal Thomas. Once again the home pair won the first, but Peter and Idwal levelled, winning the second. A run of four wins by Dennis and John on holes four to seven was halted with an away win on the eighth, giving the home pair a three hole lead after nine. The next two holes were halved and a par three by Dennis on a very wet 12th gave the home pair a four-hole lead with six to play. Halves on the next three holes were enough for a four and three win. Meanwhile, on the 10th tee, Pat Casement and Dave Crowley were playing Frank Simmons and Delme Williams. Frank and Delme won their first hole, but Pat and Dave then went on to win seven of the next eight to take a six-hole lead after nine. There were halves at the next two holes, but a win on their 12th saw the home pair in with a seven and six win. Next off of the 10th were Glyn Latcham and Graham Harrison versus Clive Jones and Winston John. Clive and Winston won their first hole with a par, but Graham won their second also to par. The Trefloyne pair then won four successive holes, their fourth to seventh, to take a four-hole lead after nine. Clive and Winston then mounted a fightback, winning two of the next three holes to pull the deficit back to two down. A chip in from off of the green for a par by Graham stopped the rot and another win on their 16th by the home pair sealed a four and two victory. The final pair to tee-off of the 10th were Malcolm Ruff and Peter Scrivens playing John Llewellyn and Derrick Davies. A very close game, with the lead changing hands. With the pairs standing on their last tee all-square, there was all to play for. This hole went the way of the away team and gave them a one-up win. The final score was a 6-2 win for Trefloyne.
