Seniors v NEWPORT
On Thursday of last week, the seniors were away at Newport Links, a lovely course in the sunshine, but not much fun in the wind and rain! Thankfully, the rain was light and intermittent and the wind did not reach gale force (writes JJ).
With two tees to start from, the proceedings went smoothly. Starting from the first were Pat Casement and Keith Warmington against P. Johns and B. Onions. Both pairs enjoyed a nip-and-tuck tussle, with the result in doubt until the final green, when the crucial putt from Pat trickled into the hole for a 1 up win.
Next off were Darrell Jones and Rod Haynes paired with P. Milne and L.Forrest. Early signs were that it was going to be a close game, but steady play from Darrell and Rod saw them take charge on the back nine, coming in with a 4 and 2 victory.
Third out were Trevor Lewis and Stuart Mills taking on Fred Curtis and Roy Evans. The front nine ended with the home pair one up; it stayed the same until the 14th, won by a par from Stuart, to put them all-square. A half at the 15th meant that with a draw on the 16th they could shake hands for an honourable draw and retire to the warmth of the changing rooms. However, Trevor failed to read the script and won it to go one up, which meant that the last two holes needed to be played. A win on the 18th meant a 2 up win for the Trefloyne pairing.
Fourth pairing were Graham Harrison and Derek Jones v M. Sajko and M. Giles. This was a see-saw game that went all-square at the 16th, and with the rain increasing in intensity, they decided to call it a draw as it was nearer to the clubhouse than the 17th green!
Dave Crowley and Jack Zeraschi also had a halved game against J. Farnham and R. Walmsley.
Last foursome from the first were Glyn Latcham and Wayne Connett taking on J. Civil and T. Morris. This was another close match, going to the 17th before a result was decided - a win for Glyn and Wayne.
Starting from the 10th were John James and Steve Jones versus Allen Griffiths and Colin Davies. No halves were recorded until the 12th, where John and Steve were one up. The next three holes went to the Trefloyne pair for a 4 and 3 win.
Following them were Malcolm Ruff and Wyn Hopkins playing Chris James and C. Sharp (a musical chap!) They were handy with golf clubs, too, giving our lads a drubbing by 8 and 7.
John Hargrave and Richard Davies took on J. Collingridge and A. Rogers, a match which ended in a win for the home pair.
Finally, Dennis Holloway and Martin Davies took to the tee against Gareth Evans and T. Jones. Another game with an unknown score, but won by Newport.
Overall a 6-4 victory for Trefloyne, a very good result at Newport.
