ALAN CHAPMAN TROPHY
The first round of the Alan Chapman Trophy took place last Thursday in glorious sunshine. Some found the greens hard work, as they were being top dressed as the competition was being played, which made putting a bit of a lottery.
The first three through to the final in August were Colin Jenkins 36 points, Darrell Jones 35 and Malcolm Ruff with 34. The next round will be on Thursday, May 17.
Wednesday night roll-up
A splendid turnout of 18 golfers took part on a fine sunny evening.
The front nine holes were played and the winner of the beer vouchers was the valley bandit, John Morgan, with a fine 20 points.
April Monthly Medal
Winter returned with a vengeance on Saturday, which restricted the number of competitors in the monthly medal. Persistent rain and a cold wind were the order of the day and many members stayed in the 19th hole rather than venture out.
Winners of Division One were - 1. Meurig Evans, nett 81; 2. Richard Davies, nett 82 (lowest gross); 3rd Pat Casement, nett 83.
Division Two - 1. Keith Hubbard, nett 81 (lowest gross); 2. Gil Thomas nett 84; 3. Trevor Lewis, nett 85.
Sunday Swingers
Numbers were down for the Swingers as some of the regulars were to play in a Dyfed League match. The balls were drawn out of the hat and everyone held their breath hoping not to be drawn in the same group as Mel the sledger Beeley. The winner was Gil Thomas with 37 points.
Victory Shield
Gavin Scotcher and Ben Price represented Trefloyne in the first round of the Victory Shield foursomes competition on Saturday. They were drawn against the favourites, Milford Haven Golf Club, with the match to be played at Tenby Golf Club. It was a very tight game, but the Trefloyne pair took the game 1 up.
Dyfed League
Trefloyne were at home for their first Dyfed League match of the season. The visitors were Aberystwyth Golf Club. Aberystwyth were given a 6-1 drubbing by Tenby Golf Cub the previous day, so they brought down a very strong team of low handicappers for the match.
Things started well, with Steff Jones and Simon Arthur winning their match 2 and 1, followed by a victory for captain Meurig Evans and Matt Adams by 6 and 4.
The next three pairings of Rob Evans and Greg Palin, Andrew Burgess and Robin Lloyd and Richard Davies and Sam Anderson all lost, to give the visitors a lead in the match.
The sixth pairing of Dan Edwards and Gareth Roberts came in with a 3 and 2 victory to make it all-square, and this was followed by a 5 and 4 win by John Calleja and Malcolm Ruff to give Trefloyne the perfect start to the season.
The next match is tomorrow (Saturday) away to Glyn Abbey, with the bus leaving Trefloyne at 11 am.
Juniors
Sixteen juniors were taken on an away day to Machynys Golf Club. The excursion was paid for out of the junior fund (writes SE).
On Monday, April 2, 16 of the juniors played Machynys golf course for free (due to money raised). The weather was perfect and the juniors had a great day and enjoyed the course.
Winner was Billy Truman with 38 points on countback from Jake Morgan. Hari Truman took third place with 33 points and a few blobs (unlucky Hari), but as normal still came in with a big smile.
A very big thank you to all the juniors who, as normal, played some good golf and were on their best behaviour .
All the juniors and Sue would like to thank Jane and Joan for giving up their day to help.
Taster days
Oliver's taster days are proving very popular, with 19 ladies attending the first two sessions. If you are interested in this introduction to golf, contact Olly in the pro shop.
