The All Wales 'Golden Oldies rugby and family festival' will take place at Heywood Lane, Tenby, on Saturday, June 8. The 'GO fest 2013' will have around 10 teams taking part in a non competitive festival, with rules designed to be inclusive to all players over 35. Players up to 80 years of age have taken part in past festivals.
The inspiration for the festival came about following Tenby Vets RFC's trip to the European Golden Oldies festival in Trieste, Italy, in June 2012, and is being sponsored by 'tenbyweekends.co.uk', the 'one stop shop' for group and family activity breaks.
The rules for the 15-a-side game generally follow IRB rules, but with some subtle differences such as uncontested scrums, coloured shorts for different age players with different tackle rules, rolling subs and, best of all, no player can run more than 10 metres before passing the ball.
There will be family entertainment including climbing tower, bouncies and jugglers/magicians. Refreshments will be available, including licensed bar, and there will be a minibus to shuttle people back and forth from Tenby town centre to Heywood Lane.
A free presentation evening is planned at Tenby United RFC around the theme of 'The older you get, the better you were!'.
A BaBas team will be recruiting players who are not linked to a club, so there will be games for everyone.
Gethin Williams from 'tenbyweekends' said: "With eight teams already booked, this is building to be a fantastic event for the whole family and for Tenby."
The event sees its official launch next Saturday, March 23, when Tenby Vets take on Kenilworth Pirates at Heywood Lane before the Division Three West clash between Tenby United and Pontyberem, 12 noon kick-off. Get in contact if you'd like a game or come along and cheer them on.
