RS200 National Championship
This event concluded last Thursday after five days of racing in Tenby bay. Two hundred competitors enjoyed a memorable contest over five sun-kissed days, sailing hard during the day and partying hard in the evening.
Local interest was provided by Jas and Steve Stubbs, Peter Rose and Ioan Thompson (at 13 the youngest competitor) and Paul and Julia Griffiths from Saundersfoot.
The event drew participants from all over the UK and was won by Ben Palmer and Amy Seabright from Hayling Island Sailing Club on the South coast of England. Several reports of the event can be found on the Yachts and Yachting website for those interested in more detail.
Club Sailing
Saturday was the first in September, so three races were sailed for the September Cup. Following only a couple of days after the end of the RS200 Nationals, many members were taking a break and only four dinghies competed; two Ospreys, a Scorpion and a Laser.
The races, over a triangular course and run once again by Carwyn (many thanks Carwyn), saw an upwind start off Monkstone, upwind towards St. Catherines and left there to the gybe mark at the Eastern. The south-westerly wind that greeted the sailors increased throughout the racing, producing some spectacular reaching and surfing down the waves.
In the first race, the Scorpion of Peter/Igor kept up well with the Ospreys to take a comfortable win on corrected time, with the Laser fourth. In the second, Ted/Lucas got away, helped by an inversion by the Scorpion, and they took first from the Scorpion second and Jaime/Alastair in third.
Martin in the Laser had enough of a work out by then and he retired leaving only the three boats to contest the third race. Ted/Lucas were quick out of the blocks and seemed to be building a winning lead, only to stop for a swim at the gybe. Jaime/Alastair took over the lead and completed the race with a good lead, but not far enough ahead of the Scorpion, who won on corrected time, with Ted/Lucas limping home third.
On Tuesday, three Lasers and a Comet competed on a sunny September evening with a force three to four westerly breeze blowing. For the first time for a long time there were no Ospreys and no other two-man boats either.
After a pleasant race, the honours went to Peter, followed by Martin, both in Lasers, then John in his Comet and Carwyn also Laser.

This continues through September; some of the Juniors are close to completing their various certificates.

The contest this season is going down to the wire. Attendance has been good throughout, with only a point or two separating the leading boats with the final race looming.
