Club Sailing
Saturday afternoon was sunny and warm, but with only a light south-westerly to get the boats round the course. Dyfan and Martin, running the racing, set a small triangular course with an upwind start at Monkstone, across towards St. Catherines, left there and out towards the eastern then back to the start.
Just before the start, the wind shifted dramatically, turning the beat to a reach and then back again. The wind was very unstable throughout the first race which, after several baffling periods was won by Jon in his Phantom from Ted/Lucas in their Osprey and Dan/Conor in their RS400.
A second race followed immediately around the same course which by then, by starting at a different point, provided a beat and two good reaches in the increasing northerly then blowing.
In that race, Ted/Lucas were able to capitalise on the Osprey’s power and they took the win from Jon, Phantom, and Dan/Connor, RS400.
Tuesday evening’s race was run by Mike Stace in completely contrasting conditions; drizzle, overcast, with a windy south-westerly gusting to 30 mph. Unfortunately, Jaime/Griff in their Osprey suffered a vigorous capsize that resulted in a broken tiller and took the attention of the rescue boat, so the race was abandoned, although Dan/Marc in the RS400 and Ted/Lucas in their Osprey all enjoyed some invigorating sailing.
Come and Try report
Conditions were perfect for last Sunday’s Come and Try and Open Day at the club. The tide was in, sun was out and a westerly force 3 gusting 4 gave a flat sea and enough strength to give everyone a taste of sailing without instilling too many fears of getting wet.
In the end, a total of 20 people turned up and were taken out using five sailing dinghies, two yachts and two RIBS, providing a variety of experiences.
Many thanks to the club members who gave up their time to help out and it is hoped that some of the participants will decide to take up sailing. We will be contacting them to discuss further opportunities to further their skills. Also we must thank the RYA for providing very useful publicity material for the event.
Junior Training
Another light wind evening gave the beginners a chance to improve their tacking and gybing and others to practice capsize and recovery. Again a BBQ was a very welcome end to the evening.
Forecast at the time of writing indicates that breezier conditions are returning and this will give us a chance to try some racing practice in readiness for the CYRC competition at Tenby on the weekend of June 11/12. Saturday, June 11, will be a race training day with three coaches at the club and on the Sunday there will be a series of up to four short races.
Any youngster with Stage 2 or above is invited to take part. With suitable weather conditions youngsters can make great progress during such a weekend. No travelling needed. All the boats are provided. Last year, 33 boats were entered, with 12 from the club. Let’s improve on that this year.
Club Kitchen
Last season’s successful partnership with Yanni of Caffe Vista being repeated this year. The club will be open for food initially at weekends, but as the summer proceeds, every day.
