The weather is continuing to be a little playful, but the club has started 2014 well. Recent reports show that good numbers of flatfish and other species are here to be caught in between the storms.

January 12, Pendine Beach Match: The 2014 bandwagon is firmly rolling. Whilst West Ham are sliding inexorably towards Champo football and 'The Special One' is raising a head of steam towards the 'Premier' Land, TDAC mullered the fish in the first match of the year... (well, I have to make flattie bashing sound interesting somehow, writes NA).

Fifteen anglers turned up to Pendine for an early start and were greeted with perfect conditions and, at least at the start of the match, dry weather. The majority felt no need to risk the shifting sands by driving up the beach and the weigh-in proved them pretty much spot on. Some outstanding bags were returned and the vast majority of anglers found fish to weigh-in.

In deteriorating conditions, the weigh-in for four prizes showed the following results - 1. Julian Davies, flounder 0.897kg; 2. Stu Allen, bag 4.734kg; 3. Ollie Gibson, flounder 0.847kg; 4. Peter Taylor, flounder 0.755kg.

As a result, Julian takes the Vice Presidents' Trophy.

In total, 31.634kg of flats were weighed in, an excellent start to the year and a platform giving the club a chance to beat last year's amazing total catch weight of 400kg. Great stuff.

January 19, South East Pembs. Rover: The first Rover of the year was a curiously quiet affair... a few small dabs, a couple of flounders and the solitary LSD were caught by the assembled 'throng' of nine anglers. It was good to see a new pairing taking the plaudits and cash at the finish, though, and a number of the boys kept their species tally ticking this early in the year.

Results were - 1. Mark Bennett and Lewis Brann, 1.326kg; 2. Barry Taylor and Nev Andrews, 0.900kg; 3. Joe Pro and Stuart Allen, 0.705kg.

Mark also took the prestigious Norman Roach Memorial Shield which was rolled forward from the cancelled match on January 5. Well done 'Megabyte'.

January 23, Mid Week Match: Sixteen anglers arrived at the multi-storey to start the Don Price Memorial Championship off with a bang for 2014. At the booking in, there were hushed discussions about a 12lb 'spur' dog caught by one of our Osprey SAC colleagues in their match the previous night and that, combined with the local bay being very slow and recent internet reports of another 'run' of codling, meant the venue discussions were carried put with some degree of seriousness.

In the end, Lydstep, Burton, Hobbs, Pennar and Stackpole (so predictable!) were the venues visited. Now, it could never be said that it was a great night overall, but there were some nice spur dogs landed, photographed and returned straightaway to fight another day, together with a smattering of our friendly LSDs.

Results were - 1. Ollie Gibson, Spur 3.520kg; 2. Nev Andrews, bag 4.966kg 3. Lewis Brann, Spur 1.840kg; 4th Garf Thomas, LSD 0.714kg.

The 16kg registered means that the club has already exceeded 50kg in the three matches this year. An excellent start to 2014.

Thanks go to Ollie for returning the LSD to the water after the weigh-in.

In between matches, Lewis has also found another tidy spurdog of 3.950kg. This has been entered for a 'Bronze' specimen award from the Bristol Channel Federation. Well done.
