SAUNDERSFOOT 80 WHITLAND 75

Saundersfoot entertained third placed Whitland last Saturday in a Pembrokeshire Division One league fixture and in a good team performance, ran out winners by five shots, picking up 10 of the 14 points which were at stake.

Only one shot separated the teams after five ends, but the lead had been extended to 16 shots at the half-time tea break.

The second half saw the visitors try and reduce their deficit which still stood at 13 with three ends remaining, but a 'bat and pad' finish (to quote a cricketing term) led to a third Saundersfoot win in two weeks to secure what is likely to be, with two home games remaining, a top five closing position.

The rink two result really sealed the match with Roy Kennion, Stew Howe, captain Paul Blayney and skip Brian Desmond in superb form, defeating the opposition, skipped by Colin Wynn, by 31 shots to 14.

Rink three also saw a home win with Nev Ruff, Doug Silcox, Brian McKehon and Steve Dick gaining a 21 shots to 16 victory over the Whitland four skipped by their captain, Steve Reese.

On rink four, Brian Deeley led for John Dugmore with John Amos second and Neil Hensman third. Up against Glyndwr Thomas, the home boys only managed to win six of the 21 ends, but kept things tight to lose by only seven shots in a 14 shots to 21 scoreline.

Rink five saw Graham Hughes make his Saundersfoot debut in the skip position, with Alan Brace at lead, Mike Ashbridge second and Roy Pring third. Although drawing after 10 ends, it was the visiting four skipped by Dan Jenner who had the best of the second half to win by 24 shots to 14.

With Saundersfoot leading throughout and with two rinks winning, credit must be given to the two losing rinks who were being constantly informed of the overall position and who did not take any risks to ensure that the win was achieved.

Tomorrow (Saturday), second place Haverfordwest are the visitors in Saundersfoot's penultimate game, the match commencing at 2 pm.

ST. THOMAS 89

ST. ISSELL'S 72

St. Issell's played their last away game of the season last Sunday when they travelled to Haverfordwest to play St. Thomas.

The match resulted in a 17-shot defeat and one winning rink saw them return home with two points.

The side complete their second division programme on Sunday with a home fixture against Fishguard.

ST. ISSELL'S LADIES 37 TENBY LADIES 36

In a home encounter last week, the ladies of St. Issell's, led by captain Kath Blayney, gained the narrowest of wins over local rivals Tenby by just one shot.

Two more matches remain for them, the first of which is another home game, rearranged from earlier in the season due to weather problems, next Monday, September 2, when Tasker, of Haverfordwest, will be the visitors.

WELSH WOMEN'S BOWLING ASSOCIATION FINALS

The best wishes of the club are sent to Ann Lewis, Stephanie Amos, Ceris Hewlings and Gemma Amos who are all competing in the WWBA semi-finals (and hopefully finals) at Barry Romilly bowling green this weekend. The ladies of the club have been successful in reaching the final stages of Welsh competitions for the past few years, winning two Welsh titles along the way and good luck in their quest for more silverware to bring home to Pembrokeshire this weekend.

CURRY NIGHT

Members are reminded that there is a curry night in aid of club funds next Thursday evening, September 5, and your support would be welcomed.

ROSSITER Tournament

The annual pairs competition between teams from Saundersfoot and Tenby, kindly sponsored by W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons, was unfortunately cancelled, but it is hoped to hold the event early next season.

COUNTY TOUR

This year's West Wales Ladies Bowling Association county tour, led by president Cally Jones, of Whitland, took place last weekend with a stay at Woolacombe in North Devon and matches against Barnstable and Byeways Bowling Clubs and a fixture at Weston Super Mare on the return home.

On the first night, entertainment was provided by the girls in the form of a pantomime, loosely (and I stress loosely) based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

I am told that there followed an appearance by Mrs. Brown's Boys and everyone enjoyed what was an hilarious evening and a wonderful weekend.

Thanks to Gloria Dugmore for again organising the tour and those, from all the Pembrokeshire clubs who supported it.
