SAUNDERSFOOT 82 (11pts) MILFORD HAVEN 64 (3)

Saundersfoot held on to their fifth place in the Pembrokeshire League Division One table last Saturday with a home win over Milford Haven. Missing several first team regulars, the lads who stepped in played their part in an 18-shot victory and now there is only one more fixture to play, away to league champions Tenby on Saturday week.

Two shots adrift after playing five ends, the villagers soon fought back to lead by 12 at the halfway mark and afterwards always had the edge over their opponents who, having been bottom of the table earlier in the season, were relieved to be playing their last match having avoided relegation.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Milford skips only) were:

Roy Kennion, Graham Roberts, Brian Desmond, Myrddin Dennis 16; Gareth Barrett 21.

Dennis Reed, Mike Ashbridge, Dave Roberts, Brian McKehon 26; Peter Collins 6.

Nev Ruff, Malcolm Young, John Dugmore, Steve Dick 20; G. Jones 20.

Alan Brace, Don Pope, Graham Hughes, Joe Dennis 20; Tony Ellyatt 17.

ST. ISSELL'S 80 (12pts)

ST. KATHS 65 (2)

St. Issell's also recorded a success in their last home game of the season when, entertaining St. Kaths of Milford, they gained a comfortable 15-shot win and 12 points. They, too, have just one game remaining, with an away fixture against Neyland next Monday.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, St. Kaths skips only) were:

Graham Roberts, Mike Ashbridge, Mike Oliver, Barrie Lee 16; P. Simpson 17.

Dennis Reed, Bob Storey, Bill Glynn, Mike Carr 22; S. Slade 19.

LADIES

The ladies teams at the club went head to head last week in two fixtures, with Saundersfoot just coming out on top on both occasions.

On Thursday, only one shot separated them and the next day the winning margin was five. In both games, each team had one winning and one losing rink, leaving Saundersfoot with eight points and St. Issell's four points.

Thursday's rink scores (Saundersfoot first) were:

Angela Roberts, Steph Amos, Viv Edwards, Marion Evans 13; Sue Roden, Brenda Davies, Ceris Hewlings, Beryl Lewis 10.

Sue McKehon, Joyce Howe, Alwen Hughes, Lorna Bissell 15; Lyn Statters, Audrey Williams, Beryl Lawrence, Amana Lewis 17.

Friday's rink scores (St. Issell's first) were:

Lyn Statters, Brenda Davies, Sue Roden, Beryl Lewis 20; Ann Evans, Christine Harris, Alwen Hughes, Lorna Bissell 14.

Both teams played other recent fixtures in what is a hectic end to the season due to games having to be rearranged because of the bad weather.

Saundersfoot defeated Pembroke Park by 24 shots, gaining all six points with both rinks wining by the same score line, 24 shots to 12.

St. Issell's travelled to Haverfordwest to play Tasker and they too gained maximum points with a 39 shots to 28 win.

On Tuesday of this week, the St. Issell's girls were off on their travels again, this time to Fishguard, and lost the match, but gained two points from one winning rink.

The rink scores from this (St. Issell's first, Fishguard skips only) were:

Kath Blayney, Janet Rees, Audrey Williams, Beryl Lawrence 28; Jenny Harris 18.

Lyn Statters, Brenda Davies, Sue Roden, Beryl Lewis 13; Ann Newbury 30.

SAUNDERSFOOT 85 BARNWOOD 70

Saundersfoot played a mixed friendly last Monday against tourists from Barnwood in Gloucester. Some of the players were known to each other as the ladies county team and John and Gloria Dugmore's tourists have both played across the border there in recent years and so for several people it was a case of friendships renewed.

On a pleasantly warm and thankfully fine afternoon, everyone enjoyed a friendly atmosphere in a game that was played in the right spirit, with the game of bowls being the real winner.

Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Barnwood skips only) were:

Dennis Reed, Tony Wheeler, Dave Roberts, Beryl Lawrence 18; T.Griffin 13.

Lyn Statters, John Haig, Audrey Williams, Barrie Lee 22; P. Main 12.

Sue Roden, Christine Harris, Bill Glynn, Paul Blayney 16; C. Warrall 13.

Joyce Howe, Sue McKehon, Mike Carr, Neil Hensman 15; B. Walden 16.

Roy Kennion, Janet Rees, Adam Hensman, Stew Howe 14; A.Wade 16.

LADIES' CAPTAIN'S DAY

This year's ladies captain, Angela Roberts, held her special day last week, but yet again bowls was out of the question due to the inclement weather and a green that resembled a swimming pool!

Not to be dismayed, Angela reverted to plan B and organised quizzes and a strange indoor version of bowls which is best left to the imagination, but involved potatoes!

A sumptuous meal was then served, which was followed by surprise entertainment provided by 'The Golden Age Nuns', who treated everyone to a splendid hour of comedy and song.

The Captain's Shield this year went to Diane Rigden for her help at the club in what has been a difficult year for her with her own health and family worries.

Angela would like to thank her family and those from the club who helped her organise the day and to those ladies and gentlemen who assisted in the meal preparation, serving and washing up and providing liquid refreshment at the bar.

In return, the ladies would like to thank Angela for all her hard work in making it yet again a Saundersfoot Captain's Day to remember.

CLUB FINALS

The culmination of this year's club tournaments takes place this weekend with two full days of bowling. As I write, the weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday is excellent and it is hoped that a good number of members will attend the green to support the finalists in all 17 competitions which get underway at 10 am.

FIXTURES

Not many fixtures left now in what has been a difficult season, with the weather playing havoc for many of us.

In addition to the two remaining men's games mentioned above, the ladies of St. Issell's play their last game on Monday at Pembroke Dock and there is a mixed friendly at the green on Wednesday when tourists from Henleaze Bowling Club will be welcomed.
