The sun shone as the ladies of Saundersfoot Bowling Club celebrated the club's golden jubilee last week with an anniversary game against the Welsh Women's Bowling Association.

President of the WWBA, Carol Booth, of St. Julians, Newport, brought along a team comprising of officers, past presidents and internationals, and friends, with everyone enjoying a 21-end match, followed by a splendid meal prepared by ladies of the club.

The clubhouse rang to the sounds of laughter and chatter and friendships were made and renewed.

Saundersfoot were delighted to welcome guests, former Welsh international and Commonwealth Games medallist Sarah Mansbridge, who dusted off her woods, and played in the match, as well as life member Joyce Waters, accompanied by her daughter Maureen, and former junior international Barbara Lockyer (nee Pendlebury).

To commemorate the special occasion, Saundersfoot captain Angela Roberts presented Welsh president Carol with a team photograph, which had been taken before the game and framed by local photographer Gareth Davies, while Kath Blayney, vice-chairlady, presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

President Carol then replied, wishing the club success for the year and the future, before making her own presentation of a commemorative plaque.

And the result of the match? Captain Angela announced that the visitors had won by a 'smidging'.

It's the turn of the men again for the next - and final - anniversary game when the Barbarians visit on September 6.

MARINERS 97 (10 pts.) ST. ISSELL'S 73 (2)

St. Issell's travelled to Pembroke Dock to play Mariners who are currently top of the Pembrokeshire League Division Two table.

Only three shots separated the sides after five and 10 ends, with the home team just about keeping their noses in front, but a strong second half of the game gave Mariners a 24-shot win and 10 of the 14 points.

Two narrow wins for skips Barrie Lee and Mike Carr at least gave St. Issell's some reward and the villagers now have just two games remaining, at home next Sunday to St. Kaths, of Milford Haven, and away to Neyland the following week.

Rink scores (St. Issell's first, Mariners skips only) were:

George Cavell, Graham Roberts, Dave Roberts, Roy Pring 15; Gert Gelderbloom 28.

Newton Griffiths, Dennis Reed, Brian Deeley, Barrie Lee 18; Gerard Thomas 17.

Edward Smith, Don Pope, Brian McKehon, Stew Howe 18; Graham Bann 32.

Bob Storey, Mike Oliver, Billy Glynn, Mike Carr 22; R. Caley 20.

FIXTURES

Saundersfoot men are also playing this weekend, away to Pembroke Dock tomorrow.

The club have two friendly matches this coming week, entertaining Bath and Bristol Barbarians today (Friday) in a mixed encounter and next Tuesday playing Oxford Town and Gown, which is for men only.

The ladies' teams go head to head twice, on Thursday and Friday, the latter fixture being rearranged from last Saturday when the weather forced a postponement.

The St. Brides Meyrick Owen team, who still have a chance of winning their league, travel to play St. Clements on Wednesday.
