Tenby United Youth 47 - 14 Pentyrch Youth 14: The much anticipated semi-final of the WRU Youth Bowl semi-final took place on Saturday in superb conditions with bright sunshine and a great pitch which was a credit to the ground staff at Gowerton RFC.

The seasiders won the toss and chose to receive the kick and were immediately on the attack, with scrum-half Cam Broadhurst giving great service to outside-half Harry Rossiter to get the Tenby pack on the front foot.

Some massive carries followed from the Tenby pack, with the front row union of Jack Brown, Matt Busby and Lucas Probert making inroads into the Pentyrch half, where an infringement at the breakdown gave Rossiter his first shot at goal and he nailed the penalty.

A great take from the restart and some superb handling from backs and forwards, with influential skipper Will Swales and Jake Roberts heavily involved, led to another penalty being given to Tenby. Again Rossiter stepped up and slotted the kick between the sticks to make it 6-0 to the seasiders.

Confidence was now flowing and, with the pre-match nerves gone, Tenby started to open up. The backs began some great counters, with centres Jack Gooding and Ben Pugh cutting great lines, giving the back three of Oakley Milton, Ollie Brown and Joe Owen the space to show their pace out wide.

Pentyrch elected to go uncontested at the scrum and this only gave extra energy to the seasiders’ pack, with some great phase play and big carries from Max Brindley, Lewis Catt and Callum Earland eventually leading to space out wide for the elusive Ben Pugh to score. Rossiter added the extras with a successful conversion to make it 13-0.

With both forwards and backs in concert, Tenby worked their way up field, where another infringement presented Rossiter with an opportunity to bang over another penalty goal.

With the half drawing to a close, Tenby managed to create another scoring chance and this was duly taken by winger Ollie Brown and converted by Rossiter, to make it 23-0 and a dream first half.

But the call from the coaches to finish the half strong wasn’t to be, as some weak tackling gave Pentyrch a try and conversion, to leave the score at half-time 23-7.

After the break, a superb take from Brindley saw him run up field, leaving would-be tacklers lying on the floor and managing to outpace the cover to score a great individual try.

This was when the seasiders started to open up and show their class, with slick hands from all the team setting up a ruck just outside the Pentyrch 22.

A switch of play from Rossiter to Gooding, allowed him to show his dancing feet to put away Milton who finished off the chance superbly.

The conversion was goaled to make it 35-7 to Tenby, who kept coming at the Pentyrch defensive line with some lovely handling, leading to Earland going over for a deserved try for his work rate.

The coaches started to ring the changes, with Gethin Kelly, Harvey Johns, Taz Richards, Evan Day, Dylan Johns, Jay Brace and Rhys Grigg all having some game time to enjoy the final quarter.

These changes showed the strength in depth that the seasiders have at their disposal, with more great quality players unfortunate not to make the starting 22.

The finishers were immediately into the action and this helped Pugh over for his second, converted by Rossiter.

With time nearly up, Pentyrch managed to cross for a well-deserved try to make the final score 47-14.

It was a huge effort from the boys, with massive defensive sets and some clinical play in attack.

Refreshments were enjoyed at the Gowerton clubhouse and a huge thank you to the committee, ground and bar staff of Gowerton RFC for their hospitality.

Tenby now move on to the final which for the boys will be a superb occasion at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff, on Saturday, May 4 (kick-off at 11 am) against Resolven RFC.

Big thanks go to everyone who travelled on the supporters bus or in cars to Gowerton to encourage, shout and support throughout the game; team manager Julia; Keith (club sec) and committee members Will Crockford and Steve Swales for the kind donations for refreshments.
