All the planning and organisation for the recent Narberth RFC annual dinner and presentation evening paid off, with proceedings working like clockwork.
1st XV team manager, Robert Basher Lewis, as MC for the evening, welcomed the chief guests, namely Phil Steele (guest speaker) and his partner, Dr. Martin Macintosh and his wife Ceri and Dr. Patsy Allen.
Then followed the awards presentations with rugby development coach Kenny Davies reporting on the Youth XV and announcing their presentations. Commenting on the past season, he explained that the Youth had finished third in the Youth League and were losing finalists in the Youth Cup.
Introducing the Athletic presentations, club sponsorship officer, Bill Ridge, commented that a number of young players had been introduced to the squad to compete in a very competitive West Wales League. Whilst it had not been a brilliant season for results, the youngsters were training and learning and developing a strong spirit. They will develop in the coming seasons.
Head coach Jon Dodd came forward and before presentations to the 1st XV reviewed the season. He thanked all for making the club great, those who work and support the Junior section, the Youth, the Athletic, the 1st XV, the background staff and supporters.
The Youth had had a good season and he looked forward to the Athletic getting stronger and stronger. This had been the most enjoyable season with the club and its most successful season since 1991, with the 1st XV having a winning streak of 14 consecutive games. After the first five games and losing 9-6 to Whitland, the players and coaches took up the challenge; it was a watershed and tribute to the players and coaches because subsequently there followed a most successful season. It was undoubtedly the best in the nine seasons he had been at the club.
The next speaker was chairman, John Owen, who thanked the club's main sponsors, G. D. Harries & Son, for their greatly valued support; the other sponsors; president Tony Davies, who had represented the club as player, captain, secretary and now president; Dr. Macintosh for his excellent services and support; guest speaker Phil Steele; the club bar staff; Natalie Bowen for the night's buffet; Patrick Jones as club photographer; and the supporters - best in the west,
He commented on the excellent season by the players and coaches and others who work for the club.
Introducing the guest speaker, Basher presented Phil Steele's CV as a player with Glamorgan Wanderers, Newport and Wales B, going on to coach Taffs Well in the early 1990's and currently is a touchline commentator with BBC Scrum V.
Phil Steele then gave a most humorous presentation interspersed with some personal anecdotes.
The last section of the evening allowed those present to enjoy and display their dancing skills.
Guest Phil Steele and his partner entered into the evening, mixing with members and exchanging views, and the following day returned to do the Junior Section presentations.
