Unfortunately this truncated match will be remembered for what appeared to be the serious neck injury suffered by Otters wing Jason Howells and it was abandoned at the interval, with Bridgend Athletic leading 8-3 at home to Narberth.

Speaking about the incident, Narberth team management spokesman Robert Lewis said: "Jason, who had experienced a serious neck injury playing rugby on a previous occasion, was injured following a tackle in our away game against Bridgend Athletic,

"He managed to walk off the field towards the touchline, complaining about a pain in his neck, but collapsed after reaching the touchline.

"He received some initial treatment alongside the touchline, a neck brace was fitted by the Narberth physiotherapist and an ambulance was called.

"Unfortunately, because of the demand upon emergency services, it took over an hour from the time of the incident to the time he was placed in the ambulance.

"He received hospital treatment in Bridgend and the initial diagnosis appears to suggest that the damage is not quite as serious as first thought and is more likely to be related to nerve damage rather than any broken bone.

"The club is delighted to report that Jason was discharged from hospital on Sunday evening"

Robert Lewis added "Play had continued until half-time, but when the referee realised the seriousness of the injury he called a halt to the game, pending the arrival of the ambulance.

"When the weather conditions became such that there was little likelihood of the match being completed, he abandoned the match as there are no floodlights at Newbridge Fields."

When the match started, Athletic started strongly against the wind, kept the ball tight, but generally speaking the Otters defended well.

There was just one breach of the stranglehold imposed by the Narberth defensive unit. It came after 10 minutes when Ath scored the only try of the match.

The ball was recycled a number of times, before Ath hooker Dan Bella got the touchdown.

The try was not converted and the Otters came back into the game. In particular, the Otters' pack was superior in the scrums.

Otters fly-half Ianto Griffiths kicked a penalty to reduce the lead, but it was cancelled out with a penalty scored for the hosts by fly-half Steven Lewis, so that the hosts were leading 8-3 when the match was abandoned.

It will be replayed on a date to be agreed.
