The term ‘nobbins fight’ is used in boxing to describe a bout where the two boxers go toe to toe for twelve punishing rounds, neither deserving to lose, and where the crowd show their appreciation at the end by throwing coins into the ring.
Those present at the Tenby Bowling Club Gold Cup final, sponsored by Molson Coors, were treated to one such bowls showdown on the Sutton Street green where Lee Williamson, formerly of the club, just held on to beat fellow previous champion Daniel Davies Junior in a match whose 21-20 final scoreline tells its own story with the game swaying from one player to the other throughout.

It was Lee’s fifth Gold Cup title since winning his first as a teenager thirty years ago, and his toughest victory to date.
Having learnt the game in Tenby as a school pupil, it is pleasing to see Lee’s sons Finley and Dylan also following in his footsteps and becoming regular contenders in the latter stages of tournaments here.
Elsewhere on the rinks, Tenby’s John Roberts collected the Giltar Hotel Silver Bowl with victory over the doubly luckless Daniel, while in the Full Bias Five Arches Pairs, Robert and James Tudor of Penygraig beat Rhondda rivals Rhys Roberts and Kav Pike (Ferndale) 18-15, Kav, at just 13 years old , becoming one of the youngest ever Tenby finalists.

The Tenby club now move on to Llandrindod Wells on Saturday, August 9, where they compete in the Finals Day for the prestigious Carruthers Shield - the national club championship of Wales - hoping to repeat their victories there of 2009 and 2019.
With Tenby also in contention to win the Pembrokeshire county league, the last weeks of summer could bring a golden end to the season in Sutton Street.
