Last Saturday, Tenby travelled to newly-promoted Cardigan for their third Dyfed League match of the season.

The course at Cardigan was in an excellent overall condition, especially the greens, although these were not quite as slick as those at Ashburnham the previous week.

The sea and coastal views enjoyed from every hole were stunning. It was a glorious afternoon, although a strong breeze added length to several holes.

The top pair for Tenby, Richard Morton and Nick Thomas, faced Cardigan’s skipper Henry Malloy and young Jac Emanuel. Better putting ensured the visitors won by three and one.

Dave Morris and Lewis Hurlow were never behind against Robert Clark and Haydon Mathias, who they defeated by three and two.

Similarly, Graham More and Jeff Banfield claimed the first hole and went on to beat Steffan Evans and Carwyn Evans by two and one.

There was also a good standard of golf in the fourth tie, but unfortunately Paul Jenkins and Steve Sutcliffe could not quite hold on to Lindsay Morgan and Chris Barrass, losing two and one.

Terry Davies got off to a real flying start. His partner Jon Bolter watched in admiration as Terry took every one of the first six holes against Nick Davies and Gordon Cutter. Terry burned himself out, but Jon’s steady play resulted in the biggest win of the day by six and five.

Darren Thomas and Loz Phillips had never been paired together before, but gelled extremely well in their three and two win over Cardigan’s amiable steward, Pat Malloy and Andrew Jones.

Rob Willcox and Ian Thomas were three down with just five to play against Craig Thompson and Peter Ward. Ian took full advantage of his shots during the closing holes and sunk a 50 feet putt from off the last green to claim a remarkable win.

During the evening, Viv John, who wore a cardigan at Cardigan, had a fabulous seven-ball finish in a game of pool. However, his putting at Cardigan and also that of his partner, Gary McNeilly, was not of the same standard. They were up against Craig Pope and Sam Adamson, who had an eagle two on the third and then birdied the fourth. The home pair won three and two.

The solid if not spectacular golf played by Martin Morris and Dai Cope gave them a four and two victory in the last rubber over Jim Saunders and Simon Bentley.

Thus, after failing by the narrowest of margins at Ashburnham on the previous Saturday, Tenby claimed a very rare away win by seven games to two.

Tenby’s next league match is the reverse fixture when they will be home to Cardigan on the Saturday after next. Squad members are asked to put their names on the list as soon as possible.
