TREFLOYNE Golf Club has a proud tradition of supporting the Royal British Legion’s golf fundraising days. And this year was no exception… even though it did have to be postponed by a week because of dreadful weather.
It was on 18th November that 10 teams ventured out onto the course for the Poppy Day Texas Scramble. A week on from the planned start date it was a reasonably fine day, but very fresh… and it certainly wasn’t easy going.
However, the 37 brave souls who accepted the challenge played some really good golf and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, on the course and off. As someone was heard to say, “It’s lovely out there but it’s even lovelier to be back inside for a warm!”
Returning to the Manor full of hope were Mary Price and Rosie Sweet, supported by husbands Eifion and Simon. Their net score of 61 looked extremely good as they came in smiling. But they were soon disappointed and had to settle for third place, just missing out to Marion and Andy Paine, and Mike Allen, with their net 60.

Then just as that threesome was starting to think they might have clinched it, in came the ‘old firm’ of Julie Llama, Meurig Evans, Robin Lloyd and Nick Griffiths. As usual they weren’t giving anything away as they asked, all innocently, “Any good scores in?”
They kept straight faces and then gradually revealed that they’d done rather well, and taken first place with a great score of 59.
Despite the scores, the real winner was the British Legion, as the day raised an excellent £280. It turned out to be the most successful year so far – thanks to the entrants, and all the members who so generously donated prizes and cash.
As the prizes were presented the organisers congratulated all the winners and gave their grateful thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a success.
