Alun Williams was seniors captain and Club vice captain when he tragically lost his battle with Covid in December 2020.

The shocking loss hurt the club and everyone who had the privilege to know him. Alun was a huge part of the golf club and the seniors’ section.

So it was with mixture of sadness and celebration that the Alun Williams Trophy was played for, on the anniversary of his passing in December.

In the middle of a spell of dreadful weather there was one day of bright sunshine for the shotgun start, which was preceded by a toast of Alun’s favourite tipple of Port, delivered by his close friend Mike Allen, round Alun’s buggy – now the Marshal’s Buggy at Trefloyne.

It was a nine-hole Texas Scramble…Alun’s preferred format…and a full house started on the sound of the klaxon.

Despite the sunshine it wasn’t easy out there, with plenty of moisture still in the grass after several days of rain. But it was a pretty level playing field as Peter Tarry had the handicaps well grouped, so there wasn’t much between the allowances of any of the teams.

And afterwards, as everyone enjoyed the warm fire and a delicious bowl of cawl, there was only a five shot difference between the last team and the winners, and in virtually every spot it was a countback over six or three holes.

But there have to be winners, and this year Mike Allen presented the trophy to Francesco Zeraschi, Rob Nixon and Graham Longster, with a nett score of 30 over the nine holes.
