Thursday, September 8, and by popular demand, 28 Tenby Seniors descended on Derllys Court Golf Club for an away day. Secretary Stan Hudson had done an impeccable job of planning and organising the day so that the only imponderable factor was the weather, and Stan left that to Carol the Curvaceous Weather Girl. Carol promised that the last of the rain would be clear of Carmarthen by 09.00 - she lied! - but just a tiny lie, because we only suffered two nasty little showers during the competition, however the wind was really affecting shots.
Starting at 10.30, after the traditional and extremely enjoyable bacon bap and coffee, the Tenby Tourists’ eight threeballs and one fourball soon got to grips with the challenging Derllys course. Faced with shots over huge lakes, immensely long par threes, terribly steep hills and deep valleys, plus a veritable Sherwood forest of towering trees! - it is sometimes quite difficult to remember that we do this for pleasure! Joking apart, it really is a great golf course and without exception, all the players thoroughly enjoyed the tournament.
And speaking of enjoyment, when all the groups had completed their rounds and we were gathered in the cosy clubhouse, the delightful Rhian along with Mum and Dad Walters treated us to some good old-fashioned mollycoddling - steak and kidney pudding? - Oh yes please! - 28 bare plates and 28 smiling faces!
Replete, the contestants settled back to hear how they had coped in the hard fought contest, and giving pleasure to some, but disappointment to others, captain Peter announced the following results:
1. Top individual Stableford score - Alan Jones with 38 points.
2. Second best score - Stan Hudson with 36 points.
3. Third best score - Jim Moffatt with 34 points.
4. ‘Strong Man’ score - Brian Waters with 19 points.
5. Twos: David Rees, Tim Edwards (two - one on a par four!), Des Stone, Alan Jones and Allen Watts.
6. Nearest the pin tee shot on a par three - Allen Watts on second hole, David Rees on fifth hole.
7. Winning team - Jeff Banfield, Peter Woodhouse and Mike Fox with 95 points.
8. Second team - Jim Moffatt, David Rees, Bob Wiseman and John Hancock with 90 points.
9. Third team - Alan Jones, Jim Martin and Newman Vincent with 89 points.
10. Charity raffle - Seven prizes, all generously donated by individual Seniors, were raffled, raising £28 for the fund.
Peter welcomed Tim Edwards, on his first adventure with the Seniors, and Norman Goddard, who is returning to golf after a fairly long absence, thanked the Walters family for their hospitality - and it was off to the patio for the mandatory group photograph of the Away Day Seniors, who are, from left to right: Jeff Banfield, Tim Edwards, Brian Diment, Idwal David, John Hall, Allen Watts, David Rees, Tony Ranoe, Newman Vincent, Jim Martin, Alan Jones, Jim Moffatt, Mike Fox, Norman Goddard, captain Peter Williams, Paul Bradley, Des Stone, Stan Hudson, Geoff Aston, John Stevenson, Brian Waters, Meurig Jones, John Hancock, Bob Wiseman, Bill Davies, Martin Neilan.
Today Friday (September 16) is the Tommy Hutton Bowl competition – see you there!
