TENBY Golf Club’s Academia team travelled to Creigiau GC, Cardiff, on Sunday,1 4 June for Round 2 of the national Academia Matchplay competition, hoping to secure a place in the next round.

Rhys Jones was first out for Tenby and, giving two shots, found himself in a tight contest. Those shots proved crucial in the end, with Rhys narrowly losing 2 and 1.

Ollie Morris and Dave Morris soon put Tenby firmly in the driving seat. Ollie produced an excellent performance to win 7 and 6, while Dave overcame the challenge of giving 19 shots to secure a superb 3 and 2 victory. Then the drama really began.

Nick Goode played some scintillating golf on the front nine and stood 4 up at the turn.

However, his opponent then produced a flawless run of golf to bring the match level by the 16th tee. Nick responded brilliantly, hitting the flag on the par 3 16th to regain the lead, but a couple of errant shots on the 17th and 18th allowed his opponent to edge the match 1 up. That left everything resting on Tenby’s final man, Rob Morgan.

Rob was 2 down halfway through the back nine and things were looking decidedly dodgy, but he dug deep and battled back to stand 1 up on the 18th tee. With the rest of the Tenby team watching anxiously from the clubhouse patio, the tension was mounting.

Unfortunately for Creigiau, their captain Rob Edwards hooked his tee shot out of bounds, and the players shook hands on the fairway, giving Rob a 2 up win and Tenby an overall 3 and 2 victory.

The Creigiau course was in outstanding condition and is well worth a visit for anyone in the area.

After the match, both teams enjoyed beer and sandwiches as they reflected on a close contest.
