Carew skipper Iwan Izzard believes his side have nothing to fear this Saturday when the Rooks take on Merlins Bridge in the Senior Cup Final at the Bridge Meadow.

Unbeaten since November, Carew’s last defeat came ironically enough against the Wizards although in the return fixture a month or so ago, they only failed to get revenge when the Bridge scored a last minute equaliser.

“We can take confidence from that,” said Izzard. “As we were a few players short of our strongest team that day. Really, we should have won it.

“We’re really excited about Saturday, we’re full of confidence, the boys are playing well. It will be tough as the Bridge are a good team but so are we.

“If we can control the game, keep it tight we’ve got enough goals in us to win it. They’ve got strength up front and out wide but so have we, I’m confident we can score goals.”

A good majority of Carew’s goals come from Jordan Richards, the former Tenby player who is in line for the league’s coveted Golden Boot award given to the player who has scored the most goals in a season. Along with Sam Christopher, they make a potent pair.

The club hasn’t appeared in a final for 14 years when they lost 1-0 to St Ishmaels whereas Merlins Bridge are far more familiar with playing in the Blue Riband event.

Izzard, a player as inspirational off the pitch as he is on it, believes that counts for nothing.

“We’ve been growing as a club for a good few years now. A lot of that has to be credited to former manager Adam Hughes who got us promoted from division two.

“We were a young side then and a lot of us have grown with the team. We know each other well. The spine of today’s team was of that team in division two.

“With a couple of additions, we’ve become the team we are today.”

Saturday, is the first of two meetings between the teams in cup final events. On Tuesday, May 7, they play the Bridge again at the Liberty Stadium.

“Whoever wins on Saturday will have the edge going into that final,” added Izzard. “But we’re not focussing on that, we’re focussing on this Saturday.
