THE Firefly Class celebrated its 80th year with a wonderful week’s sailing in Tenby, with 116 entries.

The biggest UK National Dinghy Class Championship of the year, the champions were Ben Whaley and Rhona Enkel, of Waldringfield Sailing Club, Swanage.

They were presented with their silverware by Tenby Sailing Club commodore Marc Shepherd.

The Superb weather enabled an almost full racing programme and the winners were:

Race 1: Finn Morris and Robbie Hudson, Imperial, Poole Yacht Club.

Race 2: Steve Tylecote and Tasha Armstrong, Rutland Sailing Club.

Race 3: Ben Whaley and Rhona Enkel, Waldringfield Sailing Club,

Race 4: Patrick and David Bromilow, West Kirby Sailing Club.

Race 6: Jamie and Sylvia McEwen, Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

Race7: Ben Whaley and Rhona Enkel.

Overall: 1, Ben Whaley and Rhona Enkel. 2, Steve Tylecote and Tasha Armstrong; 3, Terry and Annabelle Hacker, Rutland Sailing Club; 4, William Pank and Matilda Wilson, UEA/NBYC; 5, Thommie Grit and Louise Woodley, UEA/NBYC; 6, Brendan Lynch and Emilia Russel, East Lothian Yacht Club.

Tenby Sailing Club volunteers and staff were outstanding in making the week so successful.

Course setting was not easy in the tricky shifting breezes, and the aprés sailing entertainment was fantastic.

Saturday , 15 August: Normal local racing resumed in an exhilarating fresh breeze. Race 1: 1, Osprey 1365, Dave and Maurice; 2, Osprey 1380, Dan and Matt; 3, Europe 444, Robin; 4, Optimist 25, Autumn; 5, Redwing 241, Julian and Steve.

Race 2: 1, Osprey 1380; 2, Osprey 1365; 3, Europe 444.

Sunday, 16 August: The Redwing fleet raced around Caldey Island in what has become an annual event.

The race was won by Dianna with Mike Stace in R225. 2, R241, Jules and Howard; 3, R249, Dan and Scarlett; 4, R244 Robin and Matt G; 5, R228, Bill and Nan; 6, R190, Alex and Matt S.

A great sail followed by a barbecue in the club.
