FrostBite Series

There was another day out on the water for the hardy Frostbite enthusiasts on Saturday, October 28. Conditions were reported (with Ancient Mariner's explanations) as: 'Force 3-4 Southerly (a fair amount of wind), squally at times (hard work), some swell from the earlier storm (more hard work), fair (not actually raining, but cold and wet), grey sea and sky (unrelieved gloom),' but then we know the Frostbite sailors do tend to view things through rosy spectacles! Race officer Malcolm Williams and the ever-willing Tom Owen manned the safety boats, and set an approximate AHP course so that competitors started at Amroth, beat to the harbour mark, reached to a gybe mark between Pendine and Monkstone and then enjoyed an entertaining broad run surfing down the waves back to the start line. It is always a pleasure to record instances where sail trainees develop sufficient skill and confidence to buy their own boat and graduate to club racing. But to start your racing career in a Frostbite series and chalk up a couple of second places, as Keith Jones has done - well, that is a bit special. After six races in the series, the leading contenders are: 1. Alan Lambert (Solo) 18 points; 2. Paul Johnson (OK) 25; 3. Keith Jones (Laser Radial) 45. Then there is a long tail to the intermediate results list, containing some hot competitors - but you can't beat the arithmetic in a sailing series. The penalties for DNS (Did Not Start) will scupper the best of sailors.
