Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society begins its Programme of Talks on Saturday, October 1, between 10am and 12pm at Pembroke Town Hall.
Doors will open at 10 am for a Coffee Morning and for the first hour there will be an opportunity to visit the Museum. At 11 am sharp, in the George Lewis Room, Gareth Mills will give his talk ‘A New View on the Pembroke Dock Story'.
Gareth questions - ‘Why doesn’t Pembroke Dock get recognition as an important historic/military town?’
Is it confused as being a part of Pembroke? Is it because it was regarded as an Admiralty Dockyard in the 19th Century (referred to by the Admiralty as the port at Pembroke).
Is it because it is on the Milford Haven estuary and Milford Haven is the older town?
Is it because it hasn’t got a history before 1814? Is it because the National Museum of Wales fails to recognise it as a ‘Welsh’ town?’
His talk explores the incredibly important history of the town of Pembroke Dock and tries to answer the conundrum as to why it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
Gareth is always a popular speaker and will give our 2022/23 programme a really good start. Everyone is welcome and entry is free.
