A 77-year-old woman with no history of violence suddenly stabbed her husband with a vegetable knife, a judge heard on Friday.
Iris Griffiths attacked her husband John as he sat on a chair in the living room of their home after he had been drinking.
She stabbed him multiple times without warning and Mr. Griffiths had to be rushed to the high dependency unit of a hospital.
Griffiths, now of the Park House Court Care Home, Tenby, admitted wounding him.
Catherine Richards, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court that Mr. Griffiths had been stabbed to his chest, neck and abdomen.
After her arrest, Griffiths could not explain why she had attacked him, but told police she ‘just hadn’t cared what happened to him.’
In a victim impact statement, Mr. Griffiths said he still loved his wife and did not want her to be sent to jail.
But he was afraid of what might happen in the future.
Judge Keith Thomas said it was a tragic case.
“I am quite satisfied there is a background that led to you losing your temper. But will it happen again? The consequences could be more serious,” he said.
Griffiths was jailed for eight months, suspended for 18 months, and placed under supervision for 18 months.
Judge Thomas also made a restraining order preventing Griffiths as returning to live at the family home.
