2022 has been a very successful year for the Ysgol Greenhill Year 8 Football team so far.  Competing in the Welsh Cup, on Thursday,January 27, the boys took part in a breath-taking last 16 match against Bishop Gore School.  There were some brilliant fighting performances throughout the team, with a special shout out to Thomas Strong for a superb defensive performance.  Their outstanding 2-0 win secured them a place in the Quarter Finals, and a match with the boys from Bassaleg School.

Quarter Final day seemed to take forever to arrive, with the boys continuing to train hard with the drive and determination required to put in a good performance at such an important event. Finally, on March 10, the long-awaited day arrived, when the Ysgol Greenhill boys took on the team from Bassaleg.  The boys produced another battling, courageous performance, with goals from Tyler James and Ollie Tucker securing them their sixth consecutive win in the tournament, with a final score of 3-1.  It was fantastic to be able to have the support of the whole squad on the day, and from many of the parents that came down to cheer the boys on.

With the boys safely through to the semi-finals, Welsh Cup fever was running high throughout the school.  The boys and their coaches, Mr. Williams and Mr. Scotcher, met with Headteacher, Mr. Haynes, for a chat and to fill him in on the events of the Cup so far.  There was even time for a sneaky selfie!

On Tuesday, March 29, it was Semi-final Day, and the squad, coaches, and a large contingent of supporters made their way to Cardiff, where the boys were to face a strong team from St Albans School.  It was a close match from start to finish, with two superb goals coming from Tyler James and George Morgan (who was named Man of the Match).  When the final whistle came, the score stood at 2-2, and it was down to a penalty shootout to decide who made it through to the final.  The boys held their nerve throughout, and with a final score in the shootout of 4-2, Ysgol Greenhill were through to the Cup Final!

It was a fantastic performance by all involved, and a massive thank you goes to all those who travelled to support the boys on the day.

Best of luck in the final boys, you have the whole school community behind you!
