Saturday, May 12, saw the second fixture within a week between Whitland and Saundersfoot, the venue this time for a Carruthers Shield match being Whitland. Saundersfoot were looking for revenge following their league defeat the previous week and were not going to just hand the victory to the Whitland team.

With a group consisting of Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock, Whitland and Saundersfoot, and only one team qualifying for the next round of the competition, a win here was vital.

The Saundersfoot team performed brilliantly throughout, even opening up an overall lead of 15 shots by the 15th end. However, the Whitland team showed great resilience to bring the game back to win by three shots.

Rink one had Colin Wynn's rink of Robbie Burns, Andrew Morse and John Rees playing against S. Dick and co. After Saundersfoot raced into a 10-2 lead after five ends, the Whitland rink showed great resilience, and took the lead 18-15 after 13 ends. They then never lost the lead and finished the game 27-23 winners.

Rink two saw Nigel Davies making his first appearance as a skip for the season, and his rink did him proud by showing great determination up until eight ends to keep in touch with a Saundersfoot rink who were threatening to pull away. They then turned the screw and went from a 5-7 deficit at eight ends to pick up 20 shots and ultimately win 25-10. The rink consisted of brilliant performances from Aeron Thomas, Charlie Morse, who once again showed his talent, and David Jenner, who played a captain's role in the victory.

Rink three had the rink of Dan Jenner, Keith 'George' Michael, Bob Wood and the once again brilliant Gareth Davies. They had a tough game against the experience of Berwyn and Joe Dennis, Neil Hensman and Graham Hughes. This experience showed, with the Saundersfoot rink taking very few risks and taking an 18-9 lead by the 14th end. However, the Whitland rink showed some fight and tried their best to reduce the deficit. This rink was the last rink on during the match and a last end showdown ended up with Whitland picking up the shot and securing the win of the match for their team.

Rink four had the ever-present Glyn Thomas and his team of Ashley Reese at third, Denny Richards and Steve Morse. On what proved to be a tricky rink and against the experience of Don Poole, the Whitland rink found it a struggle to get going. However, they never gave up, and with the end of the match in sight, tried their best to keep the deficit to as minimum as possible.

The Whitland team's victory has set them up for a showdown match this weekend in Haverfordwest. The teams will go head to head in what is sure to be a the shootout for the top place in the group and progression to the next round.
