Last weekend, from Friday to Sunday, Tenby Golf Club hosted the best amateur golfers in Wales. The men's and ladies' squads made use of the excellent new facilities at the club to hone their talents and improve their already outstanding qualities. It was a coaching and conditioning weekend to prepare the squads for the forthcoming season and was organised by the Golf Union of Wales. The squads were accommodated in the new dormi complex. Despite the cold, they made good use of the all-weather driving range and the state-of-the-art teaching studio. Tenby's head professional, Rhys Harry, is part of the Welsh coaching team.
All the staff and golfers who took part were thoroughly impressed with the amenities which Tenby Golf Club now has to offer. Many compliments were made and comments such as "we now realise why you won the Welsh Golf Club of the Year award' and "these are the best greens we have played on this year and they should be awesome by the Spring."
The squads also thought that "the food is outstanding and the Sunday lunch was brilliant". Zach Gould, strength and conditioning coach for GUW, stated that "the real bonus was the hospitality that has been shown by the members of Tenby Golf Club towards these young players which has created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for them to learn and progress further."
Two of the men's squad are from Conwy, Lee Jones (27) and Evan Griffith (20), who each play off a handicap of +3. Both are very familiar with the Tenby links - Lee won the Trubshaw Cup in 2013 and Evan claimed the same trophy in 2014.
Lee and Evan, together with several others present at Tenby last weekend, represented Wales in the Home Internationals at Southerndown last year. Wales finished runners-up after drawing with England, beating Scotland and losing by the narrowest of margins, 8-7, to Ireland, despite being 3-1 up after the morning foursomes.
The Men's Home Internationals are being held at the fabulous Royal Portrush in August this year. The Ladies Home Internationals are at Royal Wimbledon in September and Tenby's Bethan Morris (17), who currently plays off 1, is hoping to take part. Everyone at Tenby hopes she makes the team.
In the meantime, golf fans have opportunities to watch these young rising stars play at Tenby Golf Club. The Ladies Scratch Open is on Sunday, April 11, and the Men's Golden Eagle is on Sunday, April 26. There is no entry fee for spectators and everyone is welcome to use the clubhouse for food and drinks.
