Llanelli

Wanderers 3 pts.

Tenby United 12

Tenby United came through a tough encounter away at Llanelli Wanderers on Saturday, earning another vital win to keep them well and truly in the title race.

Although delighted with the win, the Andrew Price, FBM Holidays, GD Harries and Molson Coors sponsored Seasiders left the field feeling a little deflated after a game filled with some very controversial and on occasions, unbelievable decisions from the man in the middle.

With confidence high and determination to settle for nothing less than a win in this very important fixture, Tenby were met head on in every area by a spirited and much-improved Wanderers side who were out to upset the Seasiders' promotion effort and to help their campaign to avoid the drop out of division three west.

The home side were the first to register points by way of an early penalty from fullback Ashley Powell. This was despite being pinned in their own half for the majority of the opening 10 minutes and they would certainly have been happy with the lead, as the Seasiders had missed many a scoring chance thanks to unfriendly bounces of the ball, unforced errors and the referee's interpretation of the offside rules when it came to the Llanelli men's defensive line speed.

In fact, with the home side treading the offside line so finely, the Tenby side were shut down in every attempt they made to launch any real attacks.

Despite United trying everything to break down their hosts and stringing many a phase together, with little attacking response from the Wanderers, it wasn't until the 39th minute that powerful Seasiders centre Jack Price was able smash his way through to touch down for his side's first try of the game, after being heavily marked by Llanelli defenders for the entire first half.

Jonathan Rogers added the extras and United went into the break seven points to three in front after a frustrating first 40 minutes which saw them lose veteran winger Dai Meyrick with a nasty head cut. Meyrick was replaced by the 'flying Gee', Jack Guerreiro.

The second half was a similar affair, with everything the Seasiders tried being thwarted by either the over-eager home defence or by the adjudicator's right arm which seemed to be locked in the upright position and pointing towards the home side for almost half-an-hour.

Not a side to moan or complain, though, Tenby, led by Chris James, just kept their minds on the job and let their determination and desire to play a wide and entertaining game, do the talking, even in the wet conditions, as they never gave up in their quest to get the win they so desperately needed.

The Seasiders' hard work was eventually rewarded after a Wanderers attack was turned over and the ball moved quickly to Guerreiro, who broke two tackles and managed to canter down the touchline to score an unconverted try in the corner.

Although it wasn't the perfect afternoon's rugby, the Seasiders can be proud of themselves in winning a tough encounter 12-3, for which they worked hard in both attack and defence.

It still remains very tight at the top of the table and all are urged to visit Heywood Lane tomorrow (Saturday) to cheer the team on in their massive game against Pontarddulais.

Every game is important for the players, the club and for the town, and support would be very much appreciated. Kick-off is at 2.30 pm.
