Tenby United 17

The Seasiders went down fighting in the Pembrokeshire Knockout Cup last Friday at Whitland's Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, but it was not enough to stop Haverfordwest from claiming their first win in the competition for 30 years.

Haverfordwest were first on the scoresheet when outside-half Ashley Sutton knocked over a penalty to make it 3-0 shortly before the 10-minute mark.

However, Tenby hit back straight away with a superbly worked try, when centre Jack Guerreiro hit a gap and fed the ball to Toby Smith who threw a long pass to Greg Caine who finished in the corner.

Smith converted the kick from the touchline to put the Seasiders ahead, but Ashley Sutton slotted two penalties in succession for the Blues for them to regain the lead.

Tenby's stern defence was now soaking up the pressure, but shortly before half-time Jason Ronowitz picked up the ball on his own 10-metre line out on the touchline and ran the length of the field, breaking every tackle before scoring in the corner.

Despite the conversion being missed, the Seasiders were set to go into the break leading and looking the better side, but disaster struck when a controversial red card was dished out to their number eight Roy Osborne by referee Chris Williams, reducing Tenby to 14 men.

The Blues took command of the match after the interval with the extra man stretching the Tenby side in such a fast-paced match.

Sutton crossed for Haverfordwest following a break by number eight Lewis Wood, and kicked the conversion himself to put his side 16-12 up.

More Blues pressure then began to wear their opponents down as right winger Darren Salmon went over in the corner for a converted score, and centre Luke Harvatt went under the posts following a mix-up in the Tenby defence.

Sutton again converted to open up a 30-12 lead, and Smith pulled a try back for Tenby after a quick tap, barging over the try line, but it was Haverfordwest who were celebrating a fine victory when the whistle blew.

"If we'd had 15 players on the pitch for the second half then it would have certainly been a different game as we were becoming dominant before the break," said Tenby team manager, Peter James.

"Every player gave everything and did us and the town proud. Around 500 supporters came up from Tenby to support the side and created an excellent atmosphere which other clubs commented on.

"Special mention goes to Luke Woods for conducting all the singing during the game and the players are grateful for everyone's support all season.

"We'd also like to pay tribute to club captain Richard Rossiter who retired after the game following almost 30 years service to the club," added Peter.
