A fine sunny day greeted the Trefloyne seniors as they arrived for their match at South Pembs, with the course showing no signs of the previous day's heavy rain. Leading off the first tee were Derek Jones and Dave Crowley, playing Keith Rees and Simon Davies. A strong start by the South Pembs pair saw them take a four-hole lead after eight holes, while a par on the ninth by Dave pulled one back, but that was as good as it got. With no further headway being made, the home pair won three and two. Next to play from the first were Mike Allen and Martin Davies, playing Chris White and Mike Bradney. This was a tight game, with the lead changing hands several times. The home pair used their shots to get ahead on the 15th and then took the 17th to win two and one. Third to play from the first tee were Pat Casement and Jack Zeraschi against Chris Clarkson and Ray Puddifoot. A four net three from Ray won the second, followed by a birdie four, also from Ray, on the fourth, to give the home pair a two-hole lead. Pat won the fifth, but Chris parring the sixth kept the two-hole lead. A par on the short ninth pulled the deficit back to one. A five net four by Ray on the 12th extended the lead to two, but was pulled back to one hole after a par on the 14th by Pat. This was immediately countered by a five net four by Ray on the 15th and another five net four by Chris on the 17th to give the home pair a three and one win. Meanwhile, on the sixth tee, were Graham Longster and John Perrott playing Don Evans and Harry James. Graham and John took a four-hole lead early and, although Don and Harry managed to pull one hole back, it was not enough, with Graham and John winning three and two. Starting on the fifth tee were Glyn Latcham and Steve Scanlon playing Kevin Dewhurst and Nigel Williams. This was a game in which the home pair took the lead and always held the Trefloyne pair, winning three and two. Next off the fifth were Dennis Holloway and John Richards playing Bob Veale and Mike Williams. This was a tightly fought game, with the home pairing getting ahead and holding a one-hole lead most of the round, until finally winning the 17th to win two and one. Third to play from the fifth tee were Darrell Jones and Vernon Jones against Dai Evans and Keith Lewnton. This was a real up and down game, the lead changing hands through the front nine, after which it was all-square. The Trefloyne pair then won the 10th and 11th, but were pulled back when losing the 13th and 14th to bring the match all-square. A five net four by Vernon on the 17th gave Trefloyne the lead again and this was followed by a win on the last to give them a two-up win. The final game from the fifth tee involved Graham Harrison and Bob Burkes playing Angus Hayward and Steve House. An even first five holes gave the impression of a tight game, but a run of four wins in six holes by Graham and Bob put daylight between themselves and their rivals. A win on their 14th hole gave the home pair some hope, but a win on the next by Bob gave the Trefloyne pair a four and three win. The final score was a 5-3 win for South Pembs.
