FINALS WEEKEND

The first weekend of September saw the season-ending Finals Weekend, with eight matches from both the ladies and gents sections being played to decide the 2012 champions.

Saturday saw five matches taking place. First out was the Scratch Cup final played between Matt Adams and Adam Thorne. This year's winner was Matt Adams.

Second out was the ladies' Milforge Singles Matchplay between Jane Richards and Heather Thorne. Playing in her first final, Jane came out on top, taking the ladies title.

Next up was the Wesley House singles contested by Greg Palin and Richard Davies. In a closely fought match, with the lead changing hands regularly, Richard Davies pipped Greg at the post 2 and 1.

Fourth match of the day involved Stuart Mills and Barry Thorne going head to head. Stuart Mills took the title in his first of two finals over the weekend.

Final match of the day involved Gwynneth Jewitt and Liz Crockford playing ladies' captain Ann Morgan and junior captain Hari Truman. Winners on the day were Hari and Ann.

Following all the excitement of the first day of finals, Sunday saw three matches taking place. Meurig Evans and Sue Ensor lost their match to Adam and Heather Thorne in the Alice Shapcott Mixed Pairs.

The Paddock Inn Pairs was played between John James and Darryl Jones and Derek Jones and Simon Arthur. In a closely fought game, Derek and Simon came out on top.

Final match of this year's finals weekend was played between Stuart Mills and Nick Johns v Billy and Hari Truman in the Bush House Pairs. Sadly, Hari was unable to play in the match, with Billy taking on the other pair on his own. Billy fought valiantly all day in a tough match, which saw Stuart and Nick take the title.

A huge congratualtions to all those who made it to the finals, and to the eventual winners. Many players started this journey back in April, some playing five matches to get to the final.

Also a massive thank you our referees Barry Thorne, vice-captain Mike Allen, captain John Calleja and Mark Ensor, who took time out of their schedules to ensure the smooth running of the competitions.
