AFTER Terrifying Tuesday, Lay-day Wednesday, and Thirty Knot Thursday, sailing resumed in sunny Tenby for the final two races of the National Redwing Dinghy Championships.

With a NW 12-18 mph forecast it was going to be a lively and shifty day.

An outgoing tide running along the start line pushed everyone towards the favoured pin end, with 241 and 244 running out of space and having to restart, leaving 249 with a Port tack Flyer to lead the fleet, covering the closest boats to the windward mark

250 was in second and 244 recovered well in third.

A few thrills and spills at the gybe mark meant swims for 245, 190, and 241, but the big drama was saved for the leeward mark when series leader 244, Robin and Steve, had an unexpected dip and retired from the race, discard gone and the points difference smashed!

249 held 250 at bay right to the finish.

With one race left only two points separated the leaders, 244 and 249.

The battle for third was also tight between the Kinvers 250 and 243.

Again a heavy pin bias and an early tack off, gave 249 the lead in a cracking breeze.

A broken kicking strap half way up the beat caused some panic, but it was soon re-lashed so Dan and Matt reached the top mark unscathed.

250 was hot on their heels, with 244 clinging on to the series lead by a thread.

Great planing downwind saw 244 working past 250 into second place, which was enough to secure the Championship, by a lonely Welsh point!

All the organisers and safety boat volunteers were thanked for making the week’s racing possible.

Nan Dowell won The First Lady Crew salver and Cyrus Prosser The Comet Trophy as Outstanding Redwing sailor during the championships.
