Tenby Golf Club's final Dyfed League match was at home to fellow title contenders Cardigan last Saturday. Tenby lost four games to three in Cardigan a month ago and the Teifi-siders brought a strong side to the Burrows. They are also away at Glyn Abbey next weekend and two good wins on the road would have made them champions. However, Tenby were up for the challenge and, although some of the games were close, they won all seven ties to be crowned winners of Division Three. Cardigan fielded six category one golfers and spread these out, thus maximising the shots for their partners. The ploy had worked well during the season, but Tenby employed similar tactics to counteract the handicaps. Dan Cope and Andrew Cope led out the home team and secured a very hard earned three and one win. Second pairing, Ben Childs and Neil Thomas enjoyed a fine back nine and claimed a four and three victory. Paul Jenkins and the returning Martin Morris got off to a flying start but had to hold on to win one up. The biggest winning margin was that of Darren Thomas and Lewis Hurlow by five and four. They were never in trouble. Steve Sutcliffe and Ian Thomas, a very successful pair in recent weeks, had to dig deep again for their two and one win. Rob Willcox and Loz Phillips finished strongly in their three and one success. In the last match, Viv John and John Stenson were three up at 12 holes, but lost four on the trot to find themselves one down on the 17th tee. Viv birdied the short hole and a par on the last gave them the narrowest of wins, one up. After winning Division One in the early 2000s, Tenby went through a lean period and then failed to enter a team in the Dyfed League a few years ago. Consequently, when they re-entered they had to start again in Division Four. Promotion to Division Three followed after a couple of years. Despite just avoiding relegation back to the fourth division last summer, Tenby have this year won all five home matches plus three away ones for a total of 75.5 points out of a possible maximum of 105 points. In Division Two next year, Tenby are likely to face opponents such as Newport, Aberystwyth and Carmarthen B. It would appear that Trefloyne will gain promotion to Division One and all at Tenby Golf Club congratulate their neighbours on such a fine achievement. The Tenby team also wish to thank W. P. Lewis and Son, Vauxhall Dealers of Milton, for their kind and generous sponsorship. This financial support has been invaluable in respect of transport costs. In 2015, Tenby will need a larger squad as each match will require nine and not just seven pairs. Thus, if there are any Tenby members who are interested in representing their club, but have not done so as yet, they should make known their availability as soon as possible.
