A group of lucky members of Tenby Tennis Club set off in a minibus at the crack of dawn last Tuesday heading for the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon. Despite the gloomy weather, spirits were high and when we arrived at SW19 the rain eased off and we were able to watch some fine tennis. It was the business end of the tournament and the tennis was excellent -ladies quarter-finals, tremendous, fast doubles, including Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis, as well as some wonderful junior tennis watched at close quarters on the outside courts.
Unfortunately, the forecast proved correct and the rain returned with a vengeance, but still not deterred, some headed for Henman Hill to watch Johanna Konta on the big screen whilst others watched under umbrellas on court two. It was still a fabulous atmosphere and the excitement of Jo’s match was infectious, so we ended the day slightly damp, but still having had an excellent trip.
“It was slightly disappointing that our trip was on the only bad weather day of Wimbledon, but it was still definitely a wonderful day, and the children were very well behaved and a credit to the club,” said Yan Morris, senior coach at Tenby Tennis Club.
“We all thoroughly enjoyed the trip and we’re happy to have watched some great tennis.”
