Club Sailing

Club sailing for 2017 got underway last Saturday with three races back-to-back from 5 pm for the April Cup.

Eight boats took to the water, but the Cherub of Carwyn and Tom didn’t actually compete in the racing. It was a great start to the season with capsizes, penalty turns and man overboard to keep the fleet occupied.

Each race saw a different winner; Peter and Igor in the Scorpion in the first; Ed and Emily in the RS500 in the second and Ted/Lucas in their Osprey in the third.

This produced a three-way tie for the April Cup, resolved under the rules in favour of the Osprey, courtesy of their win (by five seconds) in the third race. Clearly it’s going to be a competitive season!

Highlights of the evening; a crew who shall remain nameless falling out of his boat (Griff!); the Commodore completely misjudging a port/starboard and suffering penalty turns; Scorpion with spinnaker under boat; Osprey upside down. RS500 back racing after a long lay-off and going far too fast!

Next races tomorrow (Saturday); hopefully the fleet will be joined by the slow starters.

To bring sailors up to date an evening covering changes to the sailing rules will be held in the clubhouse tonight (Friday) at 7.30. All interested are welcome to attend.

Come and try

The club will be taking part in the RYA ‘Push the Boat Out’ scheme again this year, offering anyone who wants a go at sailing to have a go in club boats with experienced helms. The event will be on Sunday, May 21.

If you would like to have a go, please contact Ted Lewis on [email protected] to book your place.

Junior training

Classes are fully booked for the moment, but there will always be a few dropping out if they find sailing is not for them. Youngsters from eight years old are welcome. On the water training is every Wednesday from 5 pm, with a BBQ afterwards. If interested in going on the reserve list, please come down to the club with parents around 7.30 for a chat or ring Blake on 07717842713. Parents and adults interested in learning to sail are also welcome. We have a Come and Try day for adults and families on Sunday, May 21.

Mark-laying Course

The first course was completed last Saturday. The course had been developed by those responsible for mark-laying and setting courses in events such as the Olympics.  It was very informative and even experienced mark layers in the club would benefit from some of the ideas passed on by Olympic standard mark layers.  Many thanks to RYA Cymru Wales and Martin Stephens for setting this up. A further introductory course will be arranged as soon as possible for club members who failed to get on this first course.

This weekend the Optimist National squad is visiting Tenby SC for some training.  Optimists can be sailed by youngsters from eight to 15 years and the squad will consist of the best in Wales at the moment.

Club refurbishment.

Work is now complete and the bar will be open from 5 pm today. There will be an official opening on May 12, but all welcome to visit before then to see progress.

Volunteers needed

We are presently short of a club secretary. If you would like to help please email Ted Lewis on [email protected]
