Club Sailing

The first couple of races in the club’s winter series took place on Sunday morning, although in weather that would have looked good in July. Bright warm sunshine and light to very light winds brought 10 boats out to play; three Ospreys, two Lasers, a Scorpion, an RS400, an RS100, a Comet and an RS Feva for two races run by Mike Stace and his able assistant Isaac.

The first race over a triangular course with an upwind start saw all boats away promptly and, despite the strong outgoing tide, with the right side of the beat seeming to pay.

At the windward mark, the Ospreys were split by the Scorpion of Peter Rose (a new addition to the racing fleet; welcome Peter) keeping up well with the faster boats. The following downwind spinnaker legs saw the larger boats stretch away and the fleet spread out against the tide.

Jaime/Griff in the leading Osprey saw their lead snatched away at the gybe mark, so they tacked left immediately after the leeward mark, but the right paid again and Ted/Lucas consolidated their lead to take the win, followed closely by Dyfan/Steve in their Osprey, then Peter in the Scorpion.

All were pleased to be joined in the race by the Feva crewed by Harri and Max Richards (graduates from the Junior section; welcome to you), Jo in the RS100 (one of the volunteer junior instructors in her first club race of the season in Tenby) and John in the Comet, making his second outing of the year.

The second race followed immediately over a shortened triangular course due to the declining wind. Not short enough as it turned out! A very slow first beat was all that was managed, the race officer taking pity on the becalmed fleet and ending the race as the boats reached the windward mark half-an-hour or more after starting.

The Osprey of Ted/Lucas was first to get there, but pipped on corrected time by Peter in his Scorpion, third Jo in the RS100, then John in the Comet. Well done all.

Junior report  

The last training session took place last Wednesday.  With dense fog prevailing on the water, action was limited to a couple of RIBs giving manoeuvring practice in the Harbour. The rest finished off the onshore work to complete their stage 1, 2 and 3 work.

There will be a full account on the end of season junior party, including prize winners and certificates awarded, in next week`s report.

Many thanks to all the instructors, parents and members who have helped in any way during the season. We had 25 training sessions, with many of the helpers attending almost every one.

Winter series

The club’s dinghy winter series started on the first Sunday in October and will continue, weather permitting, until Boxing Day. There will be two races back to back on each Sunday morning, starting at 11 am. Sailors from other clubs are invited. For a charge of £20, visitors will be entitled to enter all races, store their boat in the club dinghy park, and to membership of the club until new year.

Forthcoming events

October 22: Helpers Party. Unfortunately, with many members being absent over half-term, this proposed event has been cancelled.

Friday, November 18: Club Dinner and Prize giving at the Giltar Hotel, Tenby. Details have been mailed to members; menu on club website; cheques and choices to Commodore before end of October please.

Saturday, November 26: AGM at 7.30 pm at the clubhouse. Report on current year and election of officers for next year, as well as a bit of a social. Diarise now and come and have your say about your club!
