Club Sailing

Saturday’s club races took place in ideal conditions; bright warm sunshine and a mid range force two to three westerly for the two races run by Mark Dashfield.

Eight boats competed, four Ospreys, two Lasers, a Feva and a 420, being the best turnout for some time. The first race over a triangular course saw a down wind start under spinnakers for those that had them, with all boats away promptly arriving at the gybe mark in close proximity.

Ted/Lucas in their Osprey just got away from the fleet, reaching the leeward mark with a clear lead and they sailed away to take the win. Behind them the three other Ospreys enjoyed very close racing, with Dyfan/Steve nicking the closest of second places right on the finishing line from Mike/Deanna.

Special mention to Geoff in a Laser, joining the racing fleet for the first time this summer, and testing the temperature of the water at the leeward mark. The experience persuading him a new wet suit may be in order!

Advance notification for Geoff`s book chat in Saundersfoot library on September 22 talking about his experiences from his extensive cruising over the last nine years.

The second race over a windward leeward course saw a competitive start, resulting in Ted/Lucas doing turns and everyone else heading for the gybe mark chuckling! It was catch-up for them after that and they nearly made it, but not quite. Mike/Deanna established a lead which, despite some pressure, they kept to the end, followed by Ted/Lucas then Dyfan/Steve.

Tuesday evening’s race run by Jaime took place earlier than usual because of the fading light. Two Ospreys, an RS400, two Lasers and a Feva took to the water for a race run in a challenging strong and gusty northerly wind.

All crews enjoyed a challenging evening’s sail, with some significant gusts providing some very fast reaching, and not a few capsizes. But all were pleased to have sailed and enjoyed the experience.

In the race, the two Ospreys of Ted/Lucas and Mike/Deanna took first and second, with the RS400 of Dan/Ioan in third. It was good to see Matt and Richard in the Lasers enjoying a competitive outing, and Igor/Anna gaining strong wind experience in the Feva.

Cruiser Racing

Unfortunately, last Sunday’s race had to be cancelled due to the weather. Therefore, the season’s results are now finalised. Congratulations to Denny Young in Heather, who has won the overall seasons trophy together with the midweek cup. Blake Shaw in Slipstream has won the weekend trophy. Steve Lewis in Aries was very close behind, only one or two points adrift. With increasing entries and interest (a total of eight yachts took part), we are hoping for an even better season next year.

Junior training

Last week, numbers returned to previous levels, with youngsters returning after the holidays. A south-easterly wind generated a big sea and the stage 2 group first did some shore work, before going on the water in Ribs. Training continues until September 28, with an end of season party on Wednesday, October 5.

Winter series

The club’s dinghy winter series will start on the first Sunday in October. There will be two races back to back on each Sunday morning until Boxing Day, weather permitting, starting at 10.30 am. Sailors from other clubs are invited. For a charge of £20, visitors will be entitled to enter all races, store their boat in the club dinghy park, and to membership of the club until new year.
