CLUB REGATTA

The club regatta, sponsored by local solicitors, Lewis Lewis & Co Ltd, took place over last weekend. It was the best attended, with notable turnouts from Tata Sailing Club and Mumbles, and the best weather, for many years. Saturday: Three races round the cans on Saturday drew a fleet of 33 dinghies for handicap racing. A mid-range northerly breeze and bright sunshine was enjoyed, as well as some full combat racing, with thrills, spills and collisions, most involving Osprey 1342 driven by the vice commodore! Happily the unfortunate victims were perfect gentlemen! Each race was won by a different boat and overall the visiting Ospreys of Mike and Pam Murray and Oscar and Lisa Chess were first and second, with Tenby`s Dan and Ruby Jackson in third. Sunday: The Round Caldey was gentler but demanding with shifts and holes in the wind; strong tide on both days added to the challenge. Sunday was won by Christian and Robbie Smart from PYC, Dan and Ruby second and Toby Bedford and Liz in a visiting RS200 third. Team Prize: The team event was won by a Tenby team, Midlife Crisis, on countback from Team RS who were one point ahead of Tata Tarts. So three teams finished within a point of each other after four races. Truly excellent competition and many thanks to our sponsors, Lewis Lewis & Co Ltd, Solicitors. The Rolly Squibbs Trophy: In memory of our friend, keen sailor and former club commodore who died in October 2012 at the early age of 46, his parents Arthur and Nora Squibbs presented a new trophy for the first Tenby boat around Caldey. It was won by Dan and Ruby Jackson in their RS200, who came home second overall. Many thanks to all members who volunteered their time to help with the most successful regatta for some time. It could not happen without you.

Club Sailing

It was a glorious evening on Wednesday; bright, warm sunshine and a fickle force two westerly breeze providing sailing conditions as good as they get. No surprise then to see a large turnout; four Ospreys, three RS200s, a Fireball, a Redwing, a Streaker and one of the club Lasers came to the start to contest the race run by Jon Morris. One of the RS200s crewed by Paul and Julia joining us for Wednesday evening races; welcome to them. At the start, the commodore misjudged the tide and contrived to moor his Osprey to the start mark, providing an unexpected obstacle to those behind him! The tide was running out strongly, resulting in the Saundersfoot RS200 crossing too soon and having to restart. The rest of the fleet got away cleanly and at the first windward mark the Osprey of Ted, with light weather crew Ieuan, had established a small lead which they built on to the end. Behind them, the Osprey of Mike and Deanna plugged away, with the RS200s of Steve and Jas and Dan and Ruby in close attendance. At the end of three enjoyable laps and on corrected time, Ted and Ieuan took the win, two seconds ahead of Steve and Jas, followed by Dan and Ruby, then Mike and Deanna.

Junior Sailing

Another good session on the water. Alistair's stage 2 group is getting too large, so is thinking of making two groups next time. Unfortunately, we cannot accept more juniors at the moment, but there is a short waiting list. Juniors are reminded that tomorrow (Saturday), the club is staging a Club Youth Racing Circuit event (CYRC). This is a competition for local youngsters with a programme of short races. Anyone with Stage 2 or above is invited to take part. Prizes for all classes and also a great opportunity to improve your sailing.   Turn up time 9 am at the Club, first race around 11 am, everything normally finished by 4 pm. And first timers need not worry, help and advice is all around the race course! Please let Blake (07717842713) know if you would like to reserve a boat for use during the event.
