COME AND TRY

This weekend the club will be running its annual Come and Try weekend. This is an opportunity to have a go at sailing at no expense in a variety of dinghies and cruisers. If you fancy a go, come to the club tonight (Friday) to register your interest, then enjoy Saturday and Sunday on the water. Open to members and non members at no charge. Email your interest or turn up Friday evening at the club at 7.30.

Club Sailing

Wednesday evening's race took place in warm sunshine and a declining north-westerly breeze. Three Ospreys, two RS200s, a Laser and a Streaker came to the start to contest the race run by Jon Morris. The pleasant force two to three and flat seas gave ideal conditions, so a large triangular course was set. The fleet got away cleanly, with all boats on or close to the line at the start and the RS200s splitting the Ospreys. As the race progressed, the wind dropped so that by the end of two laps there was almost nothing left. The leading Osprey of Ted and Matt just reached the finish in the last of the breeze, with the rest of the fleet virtually becalmed across the course. They took the win from Dan and Ruby second and Steve and Jasmin third, in the two RS200s. Sunday's two races enjoyed ideal conditions; warm and sunny with a force three to four south-easterly and a bit of a choppy sea. Nine boats contested the races run by Dan and Ruby Jackson. The lively conditions suited the Ospreys, able to use their power to overcome the chop, with spinnakers up for the downwind legs and crews trapezing hard. Both races were over a large triangular course, with the wind shifting to the west throughout the morning, making one reach broad and the other tight. Two Redwings also took part; one sporting experimental white sails - a most unusual sight. A most enjoyable morning on the water was had, with some very fast planing down the waves on the tight reach. In the first race, the Ospreys of Ted/Matt, the Alistairs and Paul and Steve were on the podium; in the second, Ted/Matt, the Alistairs and Mike/Deanna in the white Redwing took the honours.

Forthcoming Events

Greek flotilla holiday September 2014: Still a few places left - book early to avoid disappointment! Please contact Paul Evenden.

Saturday Suppers

Deanna's Diner is still operating in the club on a Friday and Saturday evening. Food varies weekly, and all is home made. Come and give it a try. If possible, give Deanna a ring to let her know you are coming on 07897220377; this will help planning and efficiency on the night.

Carten

Three club members recently completed the CarTen cycle sportive. Clare and Steve Stubbs and Deanna Morten, all riding for charity, made the effort. In fact, rather more effort than they intended, having to pedal downhill as well as up because of the strong westerly wind blowing on the day. Well done to them.
