Club Sailing
There is no club sailing until the start of the new season in April. There will be a sailing meeting on February 22 to discuss the 2014 season; ideas and suggestions from members old and new will be welcome. For those of you yet to try it, make 2014 the year you take up sailing; contact any club member via the website to get started!
National Optimist Squad
Twelve youngsters turned up for the national Optimist Squad training held at Tenby last weekend. Despite the strong south-easterly wind, the three Welsh Yachting Association coaches got them launching through the big surf off the pier and sailing out in waves well over two metres high. The youngster revelled in the rough conditions, some even choosing to go through the biggest waves. Only one capsize was reported as a well sailed Optimist is well able to cope.
On Sunday in calmer conditions the squad were on the water for four hours training over towards Caldey in the open sea conditions. Many thanks to all club members who volunteered their time to help with this event.
These training sessions are part of the pathway the RYA organise throughout the country to maintain the large number of elite sailors needed to end up with medals at the Olympics.
Ben Ainslie started his racing days in Optimists.
DARTS
At least it was not a whitewash at the Swanlake as, I suspect, most people, including ourselves, were expecting, given recent form.
The only success of the evening came from the pairing of Terry Evans and John 'double-eight, double-eight' Akrill, who pulled off an unexpected win against a very strong pair.
There's a gap on the darting scene until February 7, so much practice has been demanded by captain, Ruth Tebbutt. As usual watch this space - maybe, just maybe?
Quiz Night
Tenby Sailing Club was full to bursting last Saturday, late-comers having to find extra chairs from upstairs. Our quiz master Paul, ably assisted by wife Cherry, set the scene for an extremely interesting and well presented night of taxing the old noggin. Doing battle were some 10 sets of teams, ranging from two or three people to six or seven! All prizes, including the champagne generously donated by Paul and Cherry, were competitively fought for, making the evening a great success. £52 was raised for the RNLI by donations during the evening. Many thanks to all that attended.
