Sailing
On a cloudy Sunday morning competitors gathered for the second set of races of the summer series. Three Ospreys of Paul and Steve, Alistair and Alistair, and Jamie and Hanna were joined at the start line by the two RS 200s of Dan and Steve, the club Laser sailed by Richard and the Redwing of Mike Stace.
Race Officer Jonathan Morris set a triangular course heading towards Caldey, across to Monkstone and back to the start. Paul and Steve in the Osprey were first round the windward mark, closely followed by the Alistairs and the division two fleet. After the gybe mark, Paul and Steve chose to try to keep the spinnaker flying, but to no avail and the Alistairs passed them.
Their lead was maintained for a further lap, before Paul and Steve took back the lead and took line honours, whilst the Alistairs tested the early season water temperature and conducted their annual buoyancy test! Second was Dan Jackson with guest crew Danny on board and third Mike in the Redwing.
The second race saw the same course and once again it was Paul and Steve first round the windward mark. However, a mistake allowed the Alistairs their first win of the season, as forecast last week, followed by Paul and Steve, with Mike and Deanna in the Redwing, third. Alistair Jnr was so excited at this success he had to go home for a nap!
Next dinghy racing this Sunday 10:30 am.
Cruiser racing
The first cruiser race took place last Saturday. Unfortunately, the bad weather in April has delayed the launch of some of the regulars, but two of the fleet took to the water in fine conditions, force 2 to 3 SW and sunny skies. The course was North High Cliff to port, Woolhouse to port and back to Tenby.
Mike Stace slowly pulled away in the faster boat, with Blake Shaw in Slipstream in close pursuit.
Allowing for handicap, the boats were fairly level at the Woolhouse buoy, but Blake had second thoughts about going over the rocks, even at high tide, and wasted a few minutes making a detour. Mike made his time in the end and was a clear winner, but it was an enjoyable start to the season.
Hopefully the rest of the fleet will be ready for the next race on May 4 at 1.30 pm.
Juniors
The first training session on the water started on Wednesday with a good turnout, and will continue all summer, weather permitting.
Adult Training
Our adult training starts with a 'Come and Try' weekend on May 17/18/19. This is free to members and non-members and is a great chance for those who want to try the sport to have a go on the water. After that the club will be offering Saturday sailing for beginners, the intention being to bring people into the club racing on a Sunday as quickly as possible. Interested?
Regatta
Local solicitors, Lewis Lewis and Co. Ltd., of Tenby, St. Clears and Carmarthen (01994 231044), have kindly agreed to sponsor our club regatta this year. The regatta is on June 8 and 9, when there will be three races around the buoys on the Saturday and the round Caldey race on Sunday. The event will include an inter-club team race based on teams of five from participating clubs, with all races to count, including the Round Caldey Race on Sunday. The prize for the winning team will be £500. Full details will be posted on the club website.
Opening Hours
The club is open on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 pm. Howard will be cooking on Friday and Saturday and for the following weekends.
Weekly Draw
The usual draw took place last Saturday, but the owner of the winning ticket was not present so the next draw is a rollover.
That takes place tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 9 pm, but to win you must be present at the club to claim your prize. Prize fund now standing at £200!
Darts
We lost by the narrowest of margins against a very determined and friendly side. There were successes for all the participants during the evening, but alas our tenacity gave out during the final game when we were firmly put in our place.
It's been a most enjoyable season - many thanks to all who took part and in particular to Ruth Tebbutt for keeping the ravenous at bay.
We look forward to next season.
Website
The club's website includes a Facebook link and details of the club's activities and sponsors.
We are a friendly and welcoming members club and try to involve all members in a variety of activities, both sailing and social. To enquire about joining, call at the clubhouse, contact any member who will be delighted to help, or contact us on line.
