Sailing

The summer series got underway last Sunday with two races back to back run by Mike and Deanna. The bitter and increasing south-easterly wind and the cold morning combined to limit the entry.

Three Ospreys, an RS200 and Richard Johns in the club Laser competed over a smallish triangular course, all competitors keen to keep out of the water which is at its coldest this time of year.

Unfortunately, the course included a gybe which became increasingly challenging as the wind rose and the sea got rougher. Richard was first to swim; his customary balance and poise deserted him as he rolled out of the back of his boat at the gybe, then Jaime and Matt in their Osprey stalled the boat, lost all speed and fell over sideways. The others managed to stay upright and in the first race it was Ted and Matt in their Osprey from Steve and Jasmine in the RS200, then Paul and Steve in their Osprey.

In the second, the same three in the same order, except Paul and Steve took second.

Junior Training

Junior training sessions will again be run on Wednesday evenings until September. Registration was this week and next, April 17, with the first on the water session on April 24. For further information, please ring Blake Shaw on 07717 842713.

 Junior sailing news

The sailing season may just be beginning with the launch of the boats in the harbour, but some of our junior sailors have been training hard all winter.

Hollie MacDonald had a place in the  south and west regional squad and attained a fourth place in the silver fleet at the end of winter regatta at TATA.

Deryn May, who has been in the Welsh Oppie squad and the GBR development squad over the winter, was selected as one of 30 sailors to take part in Braassemeer Easter regatta in Holland where GBR won the best team and Deryn came 10th in the Bronze fleet, sailing in snow and cold easterly winds.

One of the Welsh squad, Will Hall, came fourth in the Gold fleet. Go Wales.

We look forward to hearing how they do in the Welsh Youth and Junior Championships in Pwllheli at the end of April and at the Nationals at Largs in August.

Hopefully some more local sailors will take the opportunity to partake in winter training next year and gain similar opportunities.

Adult Training

Our adult training starts with a 'Come and Try' weekend on May 17, 18 and 19. This is free to members and non-members and is a great chance for those who want to try the sport to have a go on the water, to see if the sport is for them. After that the club will be offering Saturday sailing for beginners, the intention being to bring people into the club racing on a Sunday as quickly as possible. Interested?

 Regatta

Local solicitors, Lewis Lewis and Co Ltd., of Tenby, St. Clears and Carmarthen (01994 231044), have kindly agreed to sponsor our club Regatta this year. The regatta is on June 8 and 9; there will be three races around the buoys on the Saturday and the round Caldey race on Sunday. The event will include an inter-club team race based on teams of five from participating clubs with all races to count, including the Round Caldey Race on Sunday. The prize for the winning team will be £500. Full details will be posted on the club website.

DARTS

The darts team has a tough task on its hands this (Friday) evening when they 'travel' to take on the 'Manchester United' of the Tenby and District League, namely Tenby Bowling Club, who look well on course to take another title. Team members, though, have spent many hours at the oche practising and will be seeking to send major shockwaves through the darting world.

Opening Hours

The club is open on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 pm. Howard will be cooking this Friday and Saturday and for the following weekends.

Weekly Draw

The usual draw took place last Saturday, but the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's (Saturday's) draw is a rollover. The next draw takes place tomorrow evening at 9 pm, but to win you must be present at the club to claim your prize.

Website

The club's website includes a Facebook link and details of the club's activities and sponsors.

We are a friendly and welcoming members club and try to involve all members in a variety of activities, both sailing and social. To enquire about joining call at the clubhouse, contact any member who will be delighted to help, or contact us on line.
