GP14 Returns

I'm back, albeit temporarily - I'm standing in for the new incumbent whilst he is on a well deserved holiday.

Sunday Sailing

It was a warm summer's afternoon on Sunday, which is odd in mid November, but very welcome. Seven boats contested the latest in the clubs frostbite series in a race run by Ted Lewis, ably assisted by Ieuan.

At the upwind start, the two RS200s of Steve and Jasmine and Dan and Ruby got away first, with the Osprey of Jaime and Alistair in close attendance. Behind them, and a full half-minute behind, the rest of the fleet amused themselves with several port and starboard incidents, before getting on with the race.

At the first windward mark, Dan and Ruby led from Mike and Deanna in their Osprey and, although the Osprey hit the front on the downwind legs, the RS200 was in close contention throughout and eventually took a comfortable win on corrected time.

Further back, there was much place-changing between the Ospreys of Paul and Anthea and Jaime and Alistair, who showed good speed on several legs. At this rate it won't be long before Jaime in his new boat is a force to be reckoned with.

Steve and Jasmine in the other RS200 were also mixing it with the much faster Ospreys, and they took second on corrected time, with Mike and Deanna in third.

A good battle took place between Richard in the Laser, Danny and his new spinnaker in the Vareo and youngsters Carwyn and Huw Owen in the 420. Danny triumphed by a few seconds on corrected time.

All in all, a very pleasant afternoon on the water.

Humour

"Why such long face John?" asked the other seaman.

"I don't know," said John. "Maybe it's just that we have been at sea for so long and I'm so depressed I can't seem to do anything right. Most of the time I feel so alone and useless!"

Smiling and nodding in an understanding way, the other seaman said: "John, I don't know if this helps, but let me assure you; you are not alone. Most of us on the ship feel you're useless too."
