Wednesday Sailing
A windy and wet day gave way to a sunny evening and lighter wind for Wednesday evening's club race run by Max Randles. Only four boats took part, reflecting the autumnal weather of the day; an RS500, an Osprey, a Fireball and a Redwing competed and at the downwind start the Osprey was first away, hotly pursued, then overtaken by the RS500, both boats planing fast on a beam reach.
At the gybe, the boats rounded more or less together and set off for Monkstone, but both found the course too tight for spinnakers, which were dropped two-thirds down the leg.
At the leeward mark, the RS500 led, but upwind the Osprey dominated and took the lead for the second lap.
Downwind, the RS500 caught up; upwind the Osprey extended its lead.
On the third lap, the RS500 capsized, so the Osprey won on the water. On corrected time, after a race of 45 minutes, the Osprey of Ted and Matt took the honours by two seconds from the RS500 of Ed and Emily, with Mike and Deanna in the Redwing third and the Fireball of Richard and Bill, upright all the way round, fourth
Saturday Sailing
The wind eased during Saturday and by race time was a force 3-4 southerly. Richard Johns set a triangular course starting at Monkstone with an upwind leg to the southern, left there and out to sea to the eastern gybing and back to the start.
All boats were away promptly at the start, most heading inshore to avoid the incoming tide. Ted and Matt in their Osprey chose to go out into the middle of the bay where the wind was stronger, and they reached the windward mark first, hotly pursued by Ed and Emily in their RS500 and the Alistairs in their Osprey making a welcome reappearance in club racing.
The reaches were quite broad, meaning the RS500 had difficulty getting up on the plane and, over the following laps, the Ospreys established themselves at the front.
On corrected time, division one was won by Ted and Matt, with the RS500 in second and the Alistairs third. In division two, Mike and Deanna won, from Danny in his Vareo and Jamie and Hannah in the 420.
Sunday racing has moved to Saturday evening for the rest of July and August and been shortened to only one race.
Enterprise Nationals
The Enterprise Class will descend on us tomorrow (Saturday), with racing commencing on Sunday. The Enterprises have visited Tenby several times before and have always enjoyed the superb sailing venue which Tenby offers.
Between 50 and 60 dinghies are expected, travelling from far and wide.
To run a championship requires a great deal of time and effort from members and friends. We are always looking for volunteers who can help in any way. Please contact race officer Mark Dashfield (844918) if you are interested in assisting the team.
We are looking forward to a great week with the Enterprises, both on and off the water. Various social events are planned, including the annual appearance by local band Elephant Gerald on Thursday, August 16.
Howard
Due to the visit of the Enterprises, Howard will be catering this evening only. The highly acclaimed steak pie and fish pies get better and better and better!
Opening Hours
The club will now be open on every evening and Sunday lunchtimes.
Junior Section
Numbers were down on previous weeks and conditions were such that on the water tuition was cancelled. However, land-based tuition via our simulator was the order of the day - even the more experienced sailors were put through their paces.
Weekly Draw
The 31st draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Terry Evans. The next draw takes place tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £160. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!
Humour
Two short ditties.
Price of pirates piercing: How much does it cost for a pirate to pierce his ears? A buccaneer!
News flash: A ship carrying a cargo of red paint has collided with a ship carrying a cargo of purple paint. Last radio contact confirmed that both crews were marooned.
