Saddened

The club was saddened to hear of the death of life member John Eastlake.

John was secretary of the club for most of the '60s, but together with wife Gwen also did just about every other job, such as sailing captain, membership secretary, social secretary and treasurer.

He was a keen Redwing sailor and was instrumental in persuading principal race officer and trainer, Blake Shaw, to acquire a Redwing after loaning his Redwing Chantey to him to try it out in the hope that he would get one of his own. A stalwart of the club in the early years, he will be sadly missed.

A memorial service will be held at St. Julian's Church tomorrow (Saturday), at 2.30 pm, with the wake at the club afterwards.

Sunday Sailing

A pleasant warm Sunday with a force three north-westerly brought 10 boats to the start line for Sunday's races run by Mark Dashfield: in division one, three Ospreys, an RS500 and an RS600; in division two, two RS200s, a Vareo, a 420 and a GP.

All enjoyed two races over a triangular course with a downwind start at the harbour, out to Monkstone, gybing there and across to the southern and back from there upwind to the start.

In division one, the RS500 of Ed and Emily did the double, in the first race on corrected time from the Osprey of Ted and Richard, with the Osprey of Paul and Steve in third. In division two, the RS200s battled it out, honours going to Steve and Jasmine, from Dan and Ruby, with Danny in the Vareo third.

In the second race, the division one result was repeated, but this time Ed and Emily were first on the water too. Steve and Jasmine won in division two, from Danny and Jamie and Hannah in the 420

Howard

Howard will be catering as normal this weekend. The highly acclaimed steak pie and fish pie get better and better!

Opening Hours

The club will be open on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes.

Junior Section

With school presentations etc taking place, numbers were slightly down on previous weeks, but nevertheless the trainees who took part were put through their paces by their instructors. All were treated to the usual legendary BBQ prepared by Karin Morris.

Three of our youngsters made the trip to Cardiff for the Welsh Schools and Clubs Championships at the weekend. Although not gaining podium positions, they survived the testing conditions and finished all seven races.

Matthew May and Harriet Sleight sailed in the main Topper fleet and Holly Macdonald in the main Optimist fleet

Weekly Draw

The 27th draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present so tomorrow's draw is a rollover.

The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford.

The next draw takes place tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £130. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!

Humour

While sports fishing off the Florida coast, a tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft. Spotting and old beachcomber standing on the shore, the tourist shouted, "Are there any gators around here?!" "Naw," the man hollered back, "they ain't been around for years!" Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely toward the shore. About halfway there he asked the guy, "How'd you get rid of the gators?" "We didn't do nothin'," the beachcomber said. "The sharks got 'em."
