Wednesday Sailing

Again, lack of wind meant no sailing

Sunday Sailing

Sunday morning was dry, but with a strong gusty and erratic westerly blowing out to sea. Three Ospreys, a Fireball, a Redwing, Danny in his Vareo and John in his Comet contested the latest in the club's summer series.

Max Randles set a triangular course starting from the harbour with a broad reach to the southern, gybing there and across to Monkstone and up wind back from there.

All boats were away promptly, but the Vareo quickly found the wind excessive and retired. The Alastairs and Paul and Steve in their Ospreys hoisted spinnakers and shot off; Ted and Richard in their Osprey found ropes in the wrong place preventing the hoist, so were left behind. Richard and Bill in the Fireball were nip and tuck with Mike and Deanna in the Redwing, keeping up well with the faster boats, with John in the Comet, a much slower boat, bringing up the rear.

By the end of the first lap, the Alastairs had established a decent lead, but lost it as they capsized dropping their spinnaker, letting Paul and Steve into first, which they retained to the end. Second in division one were the Alastairs, with Ted and Richard in third.

In division two, the Redwing took the honours from the Comet.

The diving prize was won by Bill Ward, expertly exiting the Fireball with a double summersault reverse dive with perfect entry to the water!

The proposed second race was abandoned and all retired to the clubhouse for refreshment.

Cruiser Race

On Sunday, three members of the cruiser fraternity took to the water in what could be described as testing conditions. Two of the yachts were reefed accordingly, but Rolly Squibbs and Denny Young in yacht Heather made the brave decision not to reef.

The course was a demanding one with a beat to Eel Point, a dead run to North-Highcliffe, a beat back to Eel Point and home. It was a close encounter between yacht Slipstream, helmed by Blake Shaw and yacht Aeries, helmed by Steve Lewis.

Aeries crossed the line a few seconds in front of Slipstream, with Heather bringing up the rear a few minutes later. However, after handicaps were taken into account, the finishing positions were reversed: 1. Heather helmed by Rolly Squibbs, 2. Slipstream helmed by Blake Shaw and Aeries helmed by Steve Lewis, with seconds separating the fleet.

The next cruiser race is this evening at 7 pm - helms and crews please note.

Howard

Howard will be catering as normal this weekend. The highly acclaimed steak pie gets better and better!

Opening Hours

The club will be open on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes and evenings until further notice.

Junior Section

As last week, a lack of wind meant the plethora of trainees had to cope with very light conditions - another training experience. And of course the legendary Terry Evans BBQ attracted the ravenous masses.

The inaugural junior 'cruise in company' will now take place this Sunday, July 8, weather permitting - please let Blake know if you intend to participate.

Juniors should note that the CYRC will be at Tenby tomorrow (Saturday). Participants should turn up at 9 am.

Weekly Draw

The 25th draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford. As mentioned, the next draw takes place tomorrow evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £110. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!
