Wednesday Sailing
Wednesday evening's race attracted three Ospreys an RS600, RS500, Redwing, Fireball and Vareo for a pleasant race in sunshine and weakening westerly breeze. Steve Garvey set a triangular course upwind from the Monkstone start towards the harbour, then turning left out to the southern and left again there back to the start.
All boats were away promptly and by the windward mark it was clear the route away from the cliffs had paid; Paul and Anthea Evenden established a significant lead, followed by Dan in the RS600 and Mike and Deanna in their Osprey. Tight reaching in the light wind enabled spinnakers for those who chose to, but with little change in positions.
On the second upwind leg, the route close to the cliffs seemed to pay, positions being maintained downwind. On the final upwind leg, it again paid to be in the middle of the bay; Paul and Anthea gave a faultless display to take the win on the water, and by some distance from the other Ospreys.
Sunday racing
Sunday morning was grey and dreary, but with a boisterous force four to five south-westerly to liven things up for the racers. Paul and Anne Thomas ran two races over a triangular course from the harbour out to the eastern, turning left there and across to Monkstone, left there and back upwind to the harbour.
The races were both dominated by Ed and Emily Dashfield in their RS500; they started the first race, spinnaker flying, and established a decent lead by the leeward mark at Monkstone. The Ospreys of Ted and Matt and Mike and Deanna, both strangely shy of their spinnakers on the first lap, were forced to regret that decision. Although both flew them on subsequent laps, they could not make up for the lead the RS500 established on the first lap and, although Ted and Matt crossed the finishing line first, Ed and Em took the win on handicap, with Mike and Deanna third. Jon Morris in his RS600 was fourth, finding it tough going in the boisterous conditions with Richard (Johns; OK Carol...joke wearing thin) and Bill in their Fireball bringing up the rear.
In division two, only Nathan in his big boys Laser competed, so he took the honours there, despite testing the water temperature once or twice.
The second race followed immediately; Mike and Deanna retired before the start. The RS500 and the remaining Osprey were neck and neck for most of the race. The RS500 powering away downwind and the Osprey making it back upwind.
By the end, Ted and Matt again crossed the line first, but again not far enough ahead to win on corrected time, so Ed and Emily took their second win of the day.
Nathan took division two; and all repaired gratefully to the bar for refreshment after a challenging morning on the water.

Junior Section
Yet another superb evening - conditions were perfect for the plethora of trainees who turned up eager to get on the water.
The Wednesday sessions are certainly proving very popular, with the register of trainees steadily increasing week by week. So much so, that a waiting list may have to be set up to cater for the demand.
Again, principal instructor Blake would like to thank sailing instructors, Sian May, Jonathan Morris, Howard Yates, Ed Dashfield and Tommy D'Ortez for their help
And, of course, the legendary Terry Evans BBQ attracted the ravenous masses.
Subscriptions and Weekly Draw
It's that time of year. The annual subscriptions are now very, very, very, very overdue. This year we are running a weekly draw which can only be won if you are present in the club when the draw is made and you are a paid up member.
Weekly Draw
The 22nd draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford.
The next draw takes place tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £70. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!
Humour
Soup of the Day: There was an old seaside restaurant that advertised, that if a person could eat their soup of the day and one oyster, the restaurant would reward that person by giving them 50 dollars.
A man went into the restaurant and asked, " What is the soup of the day?" The owner said, "It is clam chowder." "Clam chowder!" exclaimed the man, " I love clam chowder.. and oysters! This is going to be a cinch."
So the man asked for the chowder first. He knew that if he could eat the chowder, he could easily down one single oyster. So the owner brought him a big bowl... big... I mean a huge bowl of the clam chowder. The man took a bite and thought, 'This must be the best clam chowder I've ever eaten,' and he continued to eat until he ate every bit and morsel.
He then said to the owner, "I'm pretty full, but I think I still have room for one oyster," which the owner brought out to him, This was no ordinary oyster, it had to be the mother of all oysters, I am talking about a very, very large oyster... baseball size.
The man gawked at it for a second, then proceeded to swallow it down. He did so without even batting an eye. "Well," the man said to the owner, rather stuffed, "Looks like I won your 50 bucks."
The owner said, "I guess you're right.. and you should be very proud.. you are the first person to keep 'that' oyster down today!"
