Saddened

The club is saddened at the death of Edna Lawrence. Edna was a longstanding member of the club who supported her husband Des Lawrence, who was commodore of the club in the mid-80s, and her sons Roy and Chris, who regularly sail in club cruiser races. Our thoughts are with Roy, Chris and Mandy at this time.

Sunday racing

Sunday morning was bright, sunny and warm, but windless, for the latest in the club's summer series of races. Nine boats participated in the racing, run by Ed Dashfield.

At race time, the wind filled from the west and became a fairly energetic force 3/4, but the direction eliminated any meaningful upwind leg.

In division one, the Ospreys of Mike and Deanna, Ted and Matt, the Alistairs and Paul and Steve were joined by the RS400 of Mark Dashfield with Richard Johns (OK Carol) crewing. On the broad down wind first leg, Ted and Matt established a small lead by the leeward mark which they built on throughout to take the win from Mike and Deanna in second and Paul and Steve in third.

In division two, John McKellor in his Comet sailed a solid race to take first from Danny in the Vareo and Jamie in his 420.

With the wind rising, the RS400 retired before the second race; a windward leeward course out to Monkstone and back. Mike and Deanna with the Alistairs hot on their heels got away first; a fundamental error saw Ted and Matt start on the wrong line, obstructing Paul and Steve, who avoided them and started third with Ted and Matt last.

With the wind fading during the race, and various shifts and lulls by the final leg Mike and Deanna made it home first by an inch or two from Ted and Matt, with the Alistairs in third.

In division two, John repeated his performance taking first from the Vareo, then the 420.

Saturday Training

The Saturday sessions run by Mark Dashfield have begun. Tomorrow's will begin at 3 pm, after which the first of the Super Saturday series of races begins at 6 pm. These Saturday sessions are a superb way of getting into the racing scene as well as picking up valuable practice. Come on down and have a go! Members intending to participate should contact their sailing mentor.

Howard

There is a function at the club tomorrow (Saturday), so Howard will be catering this evening only. The highly acclaimed steak pie gets better and better!

Regatta Weekend

The Tenby annual regatta will take place on the weekend of June 9/10, with the famous round Caldey race taking place on Sunday, June 10.

Junior Section

What another superb evening - conditions were perfect for the plethora of trainees who turned up eager to get on the water. The Wednesday sessions are certainly proving very popular, with the register of trainees steadily increasing week by week. So much so, that a waiting list may have to be set up to cater for the demand.

Principal instructor Blake would like to thank sailing instructors, Sian May, Jonathan Morris, Howard Yates, Ed Dashfield and Tommy D'Ortez for their help

Also a huge thank you to Karin Morris and her entourage for feeding the masses.

Great news - the legendary Terry Evans BBQ will begin this Wednesday weather permitting.

Subscriptions and Weekly Draw

It's that time of year. The annual subscriptions are now very, very, very, very overdue. This year we are running a weekly draw which can only be won if you are present in the club when the draw is made and you are a paid up member. See below.

Weekly Draw

The 21st draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford.

The next draw takes place tomorrow evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £60. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!

Humour

A preacher was completing a temperance sermon:

With great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."

With even greater emphasis, he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."

And then, finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."

He then sat down. The song leader stood very cautiously and announced with a pleasant smile, "And, for our closing song, let us sing hymn no.365: 'Shall We Gather at the River'."
