A sunny but cold evening on Wednesday drew five boats to the line for the second of the clubs Wednesday evening races. A light north westerly breeze enabled race officer Mike Stace to set a triangular course from the harbour out to the eastern, gybing there and across to Monkstone then upwind to the harbour. At the start, the Redwing of Bill Dowell crewed by Tommy D'Ortez was away promptly as were the two Ospreys of Paul and Anthea Evenden and Ted Lewis/Matt Goldwait and the RS Vareo of Danny Owen with the Fireball of Richard John and Bill Ward bringing up the rear. The first reach was quite broad and at the gybe Ted and Matt had established a small lead over Paul and Anthea with the Redwing and Vareo very much in contention. The next reach was very tight, just enabling spinnakers to be flown because the wind was light, then at Monkstone turning left for the upwind leg back in. The Vareo and the Redwing swapped positions but at the end of a pleasant light wind race the Redwing took the honours on corrected time from the two Ospreys then the Vareo with the Fireball in fifth. Burgers and beer were then enjoyed in the clubhouse - thanks Karin!
Sunday morning was warm and sunny and almost, but not quite devoid of wind. Commodore Mark Brace ran two races, the first over a sizeable triangular course out to the eastern, across to Monkstone and back to the harbour. After a slow first beat, Paul Redford and Steve Garvey took an early lead in Division One from Mike and Deanna then Ted and Matt then the Alistairs all in Ospreys with Jon in the RS600 also in contention. There followed a long slow run with barely enough wind to fill spinnakers before a tight reach back in. Paul and Steve lost two places on the down wind legs and Mike was first to harden up for the second lap. Up wind, Ted and Matt crept into the lead which they promptly lost again to Mike just after the start of the run, but regained the lead by the end of that leg and held it to the end, followed by Mike and Deanna with Paul and Steve in third. Fourth were the Alistairs, then the RS600 and the Fireball of Richard Johns and Bill Ward brought up the rear.
The Division Two boats found it hard work in the light wind, but Danny Owen in his Vareo took the race from Jamie in the 420. The other Division Two boats retired.
A second race over a shorter course followed promptly as what promised, falsely, to be increased wind crossed the race course. In Division One, Mike and Deanna took the honours from Ted and Matt with Paul and Steve in third and the Alistairs fourth. In Division Two, Danny again prevailed from John McKellor in his Comet second and Jamie in the 420 third.
Saturday Training
The Saturday session run by Mark Dashfield began last Saturday in a weakening breeze, so much so that a drifting set of trainees resulted. Tomorrow's session will begin at 3 pm after which the first of the Super Saturday series of races begins at 6 pm. These Saturday sessions are a superb way of getting into the racing scene as well as picking up valuable practice. Come on down and have a go! Members intending to participate should contact their sailing mentor.
Howard
Howard will be catering this weekend. The fish pie is worth a visit!
Regatta Weekend
The Tenby annual regatta will take place on the weekend of June 9-10, with the famous round Caldey race taking place on Sunday, June 10.
Junior Section
What a superb evening - conditions were perfect for all trainees who turned up in droves. The Wednesday sessions are certainly proving very popular with the register of trainees steadily increasing week by week. So much so, that a waiting list may have to be se-up to cater for the demand. Again, thanks to Karin Morris and her entourage for feeding the masses.
