Dinghy Open Weekend
Last weekend the Tenby SC staged an Open Handicap Dinghy event together with a Gul Grand Prix for RS400 dinghies.
So far this season, the weather has not been very suitable for small boat sailing, but both days were sunny, but very cold, and with a fairly steady NE to SE force 3-4 wind.
The visiting lake sailors had a new experience with the choppy seas and the committee boat crew needed their sea legs to deal with the incessant rocking and rolling while at anchor on the start/finish line. Also wind-chill meant it felt not much above freezing. In fact, the RNLI weather stationed off Castle Hill was giving a steady 'feels like 1C '.
However, a total of 14 boats braved the weather and all five planned races (three on Saturday, two on Sunday) were completed on time and competitors adjudged the event a great success.
In the Handicap fleet, a visiting Fireball helmed by Keith Macdonald was the overall winner, while local Daniel Jackson in his RS600 was second.
Consistent sailing resulted in Alistair Mackay and Alastair Knibb in an Osprey gaining third place, Jonathan Morris fourth, Mike Stace fifth, Dan Lewis sixth, Danny Owen seventh.
It was nice to see Bill Dowell back on the water sailing well in his Redwing.
In the RS400 class, first was Mark Chamberlain, second Richard Domoney, and third James Jaffa.
They were very pleased with the event and with Tenby as a sailing venue and we hope they spread the word and return with many more in 2015 when we stage the RS400 UK National Dinghy Championships.
The club would like to thank all those members who helped during the weekend.
Race officer Blake Shaw and his team Roy Lawrence, Roy Clayton and Ann Thomas on the committee boat, Slipstream.
The safety boats' crews Mark Brace, Mark Dashfield, Paul Thomas, Paul Evenden and Huw Stiley with helpers Phil James, Ieuan James, Bill Ward and Jaime Bohata. Also Alistair Mackay for his work with the marker buoys before and after the racing, and Paul Redford for his help with the admin.
Many thanks to Karin Morris, Julia Dashfield and Helen Williams who did a fantastic job in the kitchen.
A reminder, our Regatta and Round Caldey Race is in four weeks time (June 9/10) and we hope to see even more local boats turn out for that event.
Darts
With several of our key players away, it was not possible to raise a team and so, with great regret, we had to hand the match to our opposition - an embarrassing first in our darting history. Hopefully we will have a full team this evening when we entertain Cresselly Cricket Club, who have inflicted some heavy defeats on us in the past. Watch this space.
Howard's back
Great news for club noshers. Howard's back and will be catering this evening and tomorrow evening. The return of the legendary steak pie is most welcome!
Wine-Tasting Evening
The eagerly awaited wine challenge will take place on Saturday, May 26, commencing at 8 pm. How well do you know your wines? Can you identify grape variety or country of origin without the label?
Come along to our blind wine-tasting challenge and have fun tasting, smelling and swirling some of our most frequently quaffed wines. Clue cards and hints provided. Table nibbles available. Fun and prizes. Only £6 per person with payment in advance.
To book, contact Jane Stewart-Walvin (electronically) [email protected]">[email protected] or Jayne Shorter (by phone) on 07855 326834. Numbers are limited so please book by May 19 to ensure a place. Members and friends welcome. Please note that the bar will be open to members as usual.
Junior Section
Conditions were perfect for the junior training session. A plethora of juniors turned up which delighted senior instructor Blake Shaw. From absolute beginners to race training, all agreed the evening was most enjoyable, with all looking forward to the next session.
Thanks to Karin Morris and her entourage for feeding the masses.
Subscriptions and Weekly Draw
It's that time of year. The annual subscriptions are now very very very overdue. This year we are running a weekly draw which can only be won if you are present in the club when the draw is made and you are a paid up member. See below.
Weekly Draw
The 18th draw took place last Saturday which resulted in a rollover as the owner of the 'winning' number was not present. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Blake Shaw.
The next draw takes place tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £130. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!
Humour
An elderly fisherman wrote to a mail order house the following: 'Please send me one of those gasoline engines for my boat you show on page 438, and if it's any good, I'll send you a cheque'. In a short time he received the following reply: 'Please send cheque. If it's any good, we will send the engine.'
